some friends and i want to start a nomadic tribe, and were thinking of living on a bus for a while. Those of you that have done this, whats it like?

I lived on The Highway Child, a nomadic commune. There is a post about it under communal living. The thread is titled nomadic tribe. I think anomadic tribe, or commune is a very amazing and beautiful thing. However, there needs to be ground rules, and you need to be prepared for personality issues to arise between the people on board. I think that if everyone is open to compromise, and respect, there shouldn't be too many problems. You'll need a way to make money for gas, and food. A destination is good as well, it just keeps you motivated to keep moving. You will meet many kind souls and you will see many beautiful things. I am not ready to be setteld back into my life yet, perhaps I could join you...

I travelled with Flutterby on the bus. I lived on it for nearly two months. I would recommend 1. Not having too many people; while it may lead to a greater diversity the lack of space will ultimately drive people crazy (subconsciously or not) and 2. Remember its easy to be part of a commune, unless you have more than everyone else. there needs to be some equality. This is difficult because many people will enter the community having money of their own saved.
Just agree on something, thats all i can say, it doesn't matter what just agree on something. If its not sorted out ahead of time it WILL become an issue whether its financing and how much should be spent on what or your destination like Flutterby mentioned.

well as some here know i have kept up with the highwaychild myself it was a nice idea but as a few of it's occupants said things could not work out i have to aggree with eclipse on most of his points all but one really. The one is about everyone having about the same. Well i think people should have what they earn and want some may be into one thing or another the whole commune idea is nice but sometimes it go's to far. People can live commune style and still have there likes and wants everyone being the same does not promote growth or for me anothing more then what russia had which we all find never worked.
To me a commune should be all people working for a common goal in as each person has there jobs everyday maybe 6 hours or less a day on commune stuff then they can do whatever else they want. If all they want to do is sit and smoke fine if they want to get a job or sell stuff to make money with the time and buy things that make them happy well that is great. If others get mad at them for wanting things that is there problem not the person wanting them.
Everyone needs there own space and everyone has the right to do and be anything they want as long as they do not invade others spaces. To many this is misunderstood let me make it more clear. If someone had to do things that intfer with your own space and you can not get away from it well there is a problem but if that person is doing there thing and you just do not approve of there way of thinking Well get a grip and worry about your own life.
I found this a problem with alot of the rainbow and activists and communes types i met and that is they just want everyone to be like them. Well i find that a pathetic way to be personally people have to let people do what they want it is up to them and thier god for them to decide what is right for them.
People do not see they act alot like the people they do not like and like the governments they find so oppresive. I treat my dogs the way i am talking about now. They wear no leashes or collars they come and go as they please and there only rules are one about respecting my space. Now we travel everywhere forever and so far 2 of my dogs where the kids of my last dogs who i had the mom for 14 years living this way. I did not ask her where she was or went looking for her if she was not around and she did not bitch about things i did and her kids and my other one are the same. I hear all the time how can these 3 dogs just wander all over and never get hurt or in trouble and how they are so mellow and i just always say they chose the way they are to live the way they do with me.
Now my idea of a commune i have been looking for and even have a post in find a ride under serious wanting to live on the road. I like the diea of haveing people living like gypsies traveling in vans or cars instead of horse drawn wagons(which would be aweome if it could be horse drawn wagons)
And we work together to make things work and we all share are skills and are there for each other. Now some of us may life in our vehicles some camp some may do motels but overall we are doing alot together and being there for each other it would be like family who may not all live together but live close to each other. Anyone who travels on the road in vehicles should learn basic mechanicle skills for when i started on the road i new some but within the first year i could take my car apart and put it together and i now drive more modern vehicles so there is alot i can not do but even now knwoing about it makes sure i do not get taken by mechanic shops. With a bus one of you better know how to work on them because they are expensive to maintian if you have to bring them to shops but are relatively easy to fix yourself. I have had over 1000 people look and like 40 people respond in either the post or by mail so far only 3 had cars who where interested. Everyone wants to just hump in my side seat which would mean i would have all the responcinilites and also i would have to be in charge because if someone is in my space all the time then they would have rules just like the dogs. Which would be in my space you respect it and whatever you do outside is fine. I have learned alot in 23 years out here i know how to make good money out here and not have to work much at all manually just use my brain i am a salesman of jewelry and i sell to shops. My living makes me as much in a day as most make in a month so i have the freedom to be lazy and do whatever i want when i want. That is what i can teach others not maybe make what i do because i payed my dues to be where i am and i do not just hand it to others but i can show people how to make good money out here.
I also know alot about working on vehicles i admit i am much better with the older ones but i am not bad with the newer ones. I never get harrassed by cops and the few times i get pulled over cops are ussually just warning me and not even wanting to give me a ticket the reason is i do not hold mailice to them and know if not for them we would all have to carry guns and be killing people everyday so i do not mind the occasional encounter i find if i treat cops like ai treat everyone else most of the time they are real cool and nice to me sometimes it may take a bit of time for them to know i am being real but it works out.
I have a good relationship with the world around me i do not have issues with much most of the people that i do not want to be around stay away from me for i am not the type that makes them happy. I get along with everyone if i respect or like them or not i find it just easier this way i do not try to tell people how to live and let them make there own mistakes i just do not want to be around when they do. I hang with few people because truthfully i detest most if humanity i find few who try to be an observer in life and keep an eye on how they are impacting the world as i said before everyone loves to tell you how to live but few live the example or they just forget we all have the right to live our own lives. I also have no place for whiners,blamers or angry people for all those things are a choice and i have the choice to not be around them. I have just as many good reasons to whine or be angry or blame others but how can i do these things and grow i can just sit and wallow in pathetic misery. Well my life is to short here to waste my time whining and blaming so i make it easy everything in my life that is good and bad is my fault so what do i need to do to change it or maintain it. Pretty easy once you get used to it and man it avoids all the stress on your body.
I would be glad to give advice if you have any or if anyone has a vehicle and wants to join up that is cool as long as you understand the way i require to be treated. I am not looking for anyone more then people who want a better life and is working towards it and i will be here for them i am not looking to control or tell people how to live more of just cool people who want something out of life. Yes i do have an empty seat in my van but so far no one has made me feel they are meant to be in it and for someone to travel with me in the van we have to have a connection mentally so we can live a pretty equal time and i do not have to feel like a boss.

a way to make money is important, though it doesnt really matter about finances.....boy did that one take me a while to figue out. The universe will put those situations you need in front of you as long as you are dedicated to the cause...

transition happens all the time, its a crapy thing to get used to , you will bond as a family with those on board , from time to time people will get off, for all different reasons, positive and negative, learn from the negative and put it miles behind you.

interview folk carfully before you let them on, I was ripped off a few times by those who I trusted. (betratal sucks)
even those people you would never expect to steal from you may. Watch them as they get there stuff together to leave. get folk as the get on to write an invitory of what they have with them so when they leave there is no conflict.

carefull of drugs on your bus, if its painted at all you will get searched though the benifits out wiegh the negative.

get a second mate...just as a ship would have , it sound odd but trust me its worth it, get them elected as a group decision,. voting is an excellent way to make desicions, it worked very well on my bus.

The first sign of drama, root it out and vote on it, I guaruntee no one wnats drama but if you let it set in it will make your life miserable, nine out of ten times as long as it is voted on immediatly that person will be exiled, I didnt do that at first on my bus and it almost caused the entire community to fall apart.

make sure everyone puts in and everone gets from it. if hording is allowed things wont work.

make your own choice and decision concerning eclpse though a heads up he is a thief and shitzophrenic, he is a really "NICE" person and except for when he stole my xbox, or when he hacked into my msn and slandered me to all my friends he was a very nice person to everyone around him.....oh eclpise...annie aka xxxriotgirlxxx hoped on board in calgary I got to hear everything you had to say about me, even after that olive branch you sent me in pose as a letter.....thanks for showing me more of your charachter.

its a hard highway travelling with a bunch of others, but its well worth it. the good out weighs the bad 100%

oh as for flutterby I definatly recomend her if she doenst reboard the highwaychild, she speaks her mind, puts into the community and has an excellent moral charachter
just make sure you build extra storage for her stuff

I fogot, I agree with road gyspy on diversity, though diversity has to be able to work together in an enclosed space the simpilist of ideosynchroncies will drive one to madness, its very important people are excepting of others differences, for example for a while I had a hard core christian , a satanist, a mascisit and a lesbian, on board all at once, the diversities were great between everyone of them, though eveyone was extremely respectfull of eachothers beliefs, and an issue never came up ...
on the other hand, I had three christians on for a while with small differences in there beliefs and they never stopped fighting......

so I agree difference can be great as long as the differences are working in similitude for a common goal.

I want to again say about finances , now if the goal of your community is to make money then thats different, our were about getting highway under us and out bellys fed. most of the time we sold hemp. , I was never a fan of people begging around me or my bus, though some seasoned gypsies do so very well, the ship of fools (our sister bus) lives off of flying a sign in walmart parking lots, and they make about 700 $ a day ..

My point is not to beg or not to beg though the silliest thing can make you money,

road gypsy has always been an excellent seed of advice threwout my journey , It may pay wise to keep in contact with the roma...

The concept of communal living has always grabbed my attention, yet my free spirit still recoiled from being tied down to one spot, the conept of a travelling commune is about the most perfect way I could think to live in this crazy world.
I am extremley interested in this idea, I do not have my own vehicle and as RoadGypsy pointed out most people who want to do this have no car of thier own. I have no car, but it is not because I am too poor or cannot save up enough for one it is because I chose to do away with the hassles of a vehicle and Dallas has a pretty good public transportation sytem. However, if someone was serious about this I could bring some money to the table for another vehicle or if it is a new start up then money for the first vehicle. Either way this interests me and I would love to experience the freedom this life must bring. I have a knack for making jewelry, specifically wooded bead necklaces and I would be willing to put a portion of the money or all of the money I make from them into a communty pot. Also, I am an easy going guy who can get along with anyone from any background. In fact, one of the pleasures of my life is to meet people with beliefs that differ from mine, especially if they like to discuss thier beliefs in a cool and mellow way, always respecting the fact that every one on this planet interprets life differently.

I wrote that in response to a psot you had in june. Things at that time in my life were not working to my advantage and I ended up signing another lease here in Dallas. Thus the reason I never wrote that e-mail, but I am still very interested in what you can offer in the ways of teaching. You sound so content with your life and with the way things are and I believe that I could learn a lot from you. Philosphically as well as the knowledge you possess about life on the road.
