So i've been wanting to get dreads for a while and im tired of waiting... my hair is 3.5-4.5 inches and i have the option to get them done this saturday, but the people who can do them for me want to use wax, should i go for it and just wash the wax out or just try for a natural method? is it even worth starting that short or should i wait till its longer? my grad date (a best friend) doesnt really want me to have dreads for grad but will put up with it if i have them... just fyi thanks for help in adnvanced
It really depends what sort of look your going for ya know? Alot of people on this site seem to dislike the use of wax as its often not beneficial to your dreads. I chose not to use wax and instead i backcombed and sectioned off my hair about 19 months ago. I started at about 3.5 inches like you and then just let it dreads itself over a few months until they were mature enough to keep in themselves and i could remove the beads n things holding them in, then i rubbed the ends into the palm of my hands until they balled right up. For a long while i had really really messy hair but u can just wrap your hair up in a headband for your prom or whatever. The other alternative which alot of people on this site would probably reccomend is to just leave your hair and let it dread itself but this really depends on your commitment level, the level of 'tidyness' you require for jobs and things and most of all your patience. Hope this helps brother (or sister).
dont let anyone put wax in..at all because its nearly impossible to gert out if they wont do it without wax dont let them do it..period now since your not going to let some fuckup fuck ya up with wax u got many options i started at 2 or maybe 3 inches natural just a couplre beads in some others just left em alone or pl;ayed with em some that didnt take me long at all and love love love ther result. and lack of effort too other options twist n rip. pretty easy to do, with lil help for the back or backcomb, no wax if u go natural, they could look like anything at prom time, from just a mess to funny lil dread babies to nicely formed dreads it varries widley if u backcomb they will look like puffy vbackcombed hair a long time b4 tightening into dreads twist n rip will most likely give u the most dreadlike appearance eaely still will take time to actualy lock though if u wax well.. ya dont wanna be dancin with your date andd get a dread stuck to her face do ya? whatever you choose io would not let anyone touvfch wax to your hair at all one application could take who knlows how longto remove and if they put in alot u may never fully get it all out in facft i recommend ppl who were waxed the 1st time to comb out and start over if theyre under 2-3 weeks into the journey just to ber safe. so if your gonna allow wax with the intention of removing the wax after, dont bother letting them help u at all cause the only sure way to be 100% dsure u get wax free is to comb em clean em and start over. so..if they are willing tio do it without a touch of wax fine (i really hope your talking bout freinds, not a saklon, salons are scams and intentuionaly mess u up usualy) now if thewy wont do it wothiout wax fuck em, do it yourself a combination of methods if u want the back twist and throw on a bead the rest i can twist n rip or backcomb or go natural if u go natural theres no guessing how u may look come prom time, but thats ok, typing it back, smoothing it with aloe are easy wqays to look more pressentable with 4 inches, natural wont be a quick option though unless you have great hair for dreading. so u may not see alotta dreadiness for a couple months your really best off to just do it yourself with the help of a trusted freind if uu decide to use a starter method like twist n rip or backcomb just to be sure they wont do nothin u dont want em to..
i dont see how anyone could be so hard and fast about wax, if u dont want it just tell them not to put it in there, its your hair after all
lol so i thought about it for a few more hours and im not gonna do it saturday (damn i really want dreads but ill be patient ) and then ill buy some residue free soap and a wool hat and some other fun things while im in Nelson at the markets they have their...and try for the natural method thanks for the help guys for the natural method, from my understanding, just wash my hair with residue free soap and let it air dry itself? do nothing to it besides that?
unless you want to pull the sections apart to amke smaller dreads, you should have some nice dreads on the way
yea id advise ya do keep ontop of seperating em so they dont over combine your hairs lil short for natural, but thats ok..u can do a revised natural (yes making this up as i go along..lol) take a section and finger tease it pinch the end wioth 1 hand with the other rubb it towards the scalp twisting lil while u do. dont do this alot..but alittle can help compensate for the shortness and get it goin lil but mostly all u wannas do is leave it tdo its thing and sepewrate and keep it clean (clean relativly..daily cleaning causes excess oilsd..cleanning weekly or as needed u get less oils..u get lil bit dirty b4 u wash..but i dont wanns go all grngy and nasty..u want mostly clean just not so much that yours strippinmg opilds so u make more oils to compensate try extendingthe wash xcycle 1 more day then feels ok till yoir near a week then just wash whjnen u feel dirty or itchy if u play with it alot do it gently at 1st..in ways that help knots..nit unknot knots. sea salt helps alot too hope that helps..the shortness will make it lil slower but these steps should compensate so it wont be too bad mine started short too and doidnt seem to take long at all..but mines thick enough to pull a truck with..lol it just had to dread
my hairs pretty thick to actually atleast everyone says so... thanks for your tips Eagle i'll definately keep you guys updated with how it goes.
Every haircutter I have ever had always coments about how thick my hair is (this was pre dreads mind you haha)
