Okay, lots of people want to build a STOVL, or VTOL Remote control plane, not many people have succeeded, a lot fo the problem is that impulse thrust, and static thrust, are VERY hard with propellers, and ducted fans

this is why we use jets in the real world, because a jet has a much higher thrust/weight ratio, also, a jet is capable of producing a great deal of impulse thrust AND a great deal of static thrust, the problem is, for most people a jet is impractical for an RC plane, so, you see compromises

with lightweight materials that do not have scalar durability, with power assemblies that are absolutely not scalar, with power drives bigger than the plane

there is a reason the harrier can use such an inefficient design, and get away with it, but, something much smaller, cannot.

Jets, and the incredible fuels they can use are FUCKING AMAZING, and are incredibly hard to match on a scalar level

if you could reasonably build a 1:12th scale jet engine (would be CRAZY expensive) hell, if they were something "widely available" motherfuckers could build god damn tapdancing f-16's if they wanted to.

    Hopefully.

It's not like we're not going to die at 2012...

crap, now I need to get a job at Pratt and Whitney to learn to build this kind of shit and sell it to hobbyists with way too much money on their hands.

and build a harrier RC that is perfectly scale :p

What Is The Anticipated Range Of This Plane You Intend On Building.??

It Won't Reach O.Z. Will It??........(googles plans for air-raid shelters)

    Cheers Glen.

Well- I suspect that the economic thinning of the herd is well under way as I type this. Perhaps a few people might take inspiration with grimjivey's thread and off themselves soon while they still can own firearms (shooting yourself with an unregistered handgun invalidates your death)

You better watch out, suicide is technically illegal.

People need to shoot now, shoot well, and shoot to win.

Who are we supposed to be shooting???

Each other? (So that insurance will pay for and/or TO any survivors, of course)

    "The Enemy?" (Which one?)

    Our government?

    Sorry.

    No can do.

Unless, of course, you happen to have a spare flame-thrower for sale?

    i'm sort of a pyromaniac...

there's just something so beautiful about flames,

    especially controlled flames! :p

Does "Not Liking/Agreeing With/Fearing the State Government and/or the Federal Government" count as a good reason(s)?

I think it's a terminally ill clause ... but if you think about it.. aren't we all terminally ill ?

    right to die with dignity.

Dave I didn't click any of your links. Ducted fan propulsion has been available to RCers since at least 1980. The rest can be made out of scrap titanium, readily available since the fall of the Soviet Union. Hell, my backpack frame, camp cooking pot and drinking cup are Ti and contain enough metal to skin a model that small. Vectoring thrust the way a Harrier does is a matter of ducted fans using two servos each. One for lateral trim and one for horizontal/vertical vector. Balancing thrust between the two engines is the only challenge you'd face.
