I have been wanting to learn a stringed
instrument for some time now, but I can't
really afford a harp or a guitar like I would
prefer so I was thinking a ukelele. Since
they are small, cheaper and I saw a cute
book for 60s songs on them. I even found
a place on-line for downloading free how
    to play them books.
So here is the thing...how do I pick one that
I can afford but isn't just 'pretty' for the wall?
    thanks:)

I have been looking on e-bay mostly, but also
a hawaiian shop and musicians friend.....those
are all on-line....guess I should go check out the
local music places(but they are more expensive)
but I do know I do NOT want a bart simpson one!
    oh gag!
    thanks!!

I've been playing for two years now on a $20 ukulele I got off the internet. No one can tell the difference.

Here's a ukulele. I can't find the one I bought. They might not have the same deal for it anymore.

Good luck with your future ukulele-ing!

since ukuleles are such small instruments you need to get a well crafted one to get the right sound and feel. go Bushman.

i can't stress enough that you REAALLY get what you pay for when buying a ukulele. there are two levels of uke it seems ...toy and instrument. which one are you going to settle for.

PS-i'm a music snob. this comes from the music teacher in me. just buy something worth more than $30, it wont be a toy and it'll be worth that much more to you for it's craftsmanship.

Well, I don't have much money at the moment so I was thinking
$30-50 or so....less would be nice but I don't want to get junk
    and be disappointed.....
thanks for all the imput and one more question how can you
tell if the tuning pegs are slippy?
    peace,

hiii i play the uke, and it's so much fun... all i play is 60s tunes, you'll always find me strumming a beatles chord.
it's easy. just get a cheap maholo one at first, and its simple to teach yourself online. best of luck<3 peace

I've always wanted to pick up the ukulele. I figured I'd try to be a sick guitar player first since I already have a couple guitars.

If you like ukulele, check out www.myspace.com/jaaaaaaa. Julia Nunes is awesome.

I'd really like to learn to play, too. Good luck!

My brother is nominating me for a free ukulele at this
web site run by the luthier. He gives away one of his
    specially made ukes every month.:)
It would be so cool to win. My bro will be happy too as
all as I don't play "tip toe through the tulips"!
    peace,
