Long ago on October 31st (Halloween) witches and ghosts roamed the earth and so people started wearing costumes on that day to scare off the witches and ghosts and that’s how Halloween started. anybody else have anything to add to this?? i looked this up in books and on the internet about the true story behind halloween.
about the candy.. well what I have heard is that poor people long ago asked trick or treat.. so either the people gaves them a treat (because they were very hungry and poor) or they would give them a very mean trick. do something terrible to them
No not poisonous candy.. haa haa... actually it wasn't even candy it was more like food/jewlery but mostly food... they just added the candy to our time instead of giving food to the people in costumes.. back then they didn't give out candy or poisonous candy
they didn't do those type of mean tricks... they set their house on fire did stuff and blamed them for it so that they could get hung for it... those types... or broke into their house and took stuff
Haha yay for fun tricks like burning peoples houses down and hangings!! I think candy is a better idea...
actually its grown out of an old pagan festival called Samhain. centuries ago people dieing at the end of a long life was pretty rare, and this was the time of year that people died, with the cold weather, also farm animals where slaughtered at this time of year and people just hoped that the food would last through to spring. at this time of year our ancestors would become indoor creatures, so things like divination would be popular as forms of entertainment. later our ancestors would come to believe that the veils to the other worlds where thin at this time and they could communicate with their beloved dead. people would set an extra place for their dead relatives that sort of thing. it was also believed that communication with fiary realms was possible and spells where espically powerful. on the arrival of christianity, nov 1st, became all saints day and 31 all hallows eve hallows being saints, then it became halloween, and became the spook feast it is now. pagans are generally more interested in celebrating Samhain at this time of year and bringing back the old ways, your point about trick or treating coming from poor children begging is probably right. for more info on halloweens roots look up 'samhain' on google S
I remember a stroy about when people would send their kids around, in costumes, to get raped and then they decided giving them candy sould be better
