I disagree with that "more lamer" comment... I am 10 TIMES cooler than I was as a befuddled, awkward, "trying to discover my own identity" 22 year old... Let's not even discuss teenage years... Because you may have really adult emotions and feelings, but you still lack the adult "thought process..." Young adults are LUNATICS... Now, I'm nowhere as CRAZY or RECKLESS or PRONE TO ARREST as I was a young adult, but I am WAY COOLER...Now, I'm not trying to insult all the kids on the board. You guys are more sharp and more cogent at this point in your life that you will be later... You have very valid opinions and points, and you are ADULTS, in many fashions... But being 30 years old, and having a mortgage, and KIDS, really will change you... But it made me appreciate my uniqueness more, made my relish my individuality and ability to be CRAZY and HOG WILD during the summer festival circuit. So, growing up made me much cooler... Maybe that's just me... But I don't think so... The world wouldn't be safe if I had my brain TODAY in an 18 year old's body... Hide your daughters! Shoot, hide everyone!
Uh...Funky....I was including myself in this question. I do in fact love 70s and 80s punk rock. I was simply asking why the youth of today look back to a period of old songs and bands that are broke up to bring them company. I wasn't excluding myself and acting like I was all cool for not listening to oldies. I just wanted an explanation. Don't get mad.
hey now, there is way too much monkee hate. first of all, to compare the monkees to the music whores of today is so unfair (there are better examples, anyway, as back in the early days of pop, everyone was manufactured. Not much has changed, I suppose) because The Monkees are more like 2Gether than the backstreet boys. It was a TV show and a band that came with it. They filled the requirements. The show was funny, they were charismatic and easy to look at. They had a lot of good songs, and *yes* they did write a lot of their own music. My two favourite songs from the Monkees are Randy Scouse Git and Going Down, they're amazing and you probably wouldn't expect them from the monkees if you are but a casual observer. Anyway, about the topic. How ridiculous. Good music is good music. Why do people listen to classical music? it's from hundreds of years ago! Who gives a shit? It sounds good! If it turns ya on, listen to it, baby! I listen to all sorts of music spanning the whole last century and some classic stuff. The ideas resonate. Growing up in the 2000s is not too different than growing up in the 60s and 50s. There has always been disenfranchised youth, love, unrequited love, fucking, war, social protest, and politics. Just because it's "your parents music" doesn't invalidate(right prefix?) the music. It can be just as important to you as it was to them at the same age. And while they are not facing the same problems anymore, they once did, too. It's not this bullshit that oh my parents my parents, eternal fogeys. Your parents were young once too. They were sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, whatever. There was still sex, drugs, rock and roll, smoking, love, and whatever when they were young. It's a fact of life. Every parent's gone through puberty. Lindi (p.s. welcome back to me!)
Maybe because most artists nowadays aren't really artists. They're corporate sponsors idiots who sing about stupid shit. Back in the 60s, they made GREAT music. I name The Beatles, The Doors, Pink Floyd, that kind of stuff. Fuck corporate punk, and all of that garbage.
Wow, I love the way you expressed exactly how I feel. It is hard to maintain your ideals in the face of the day-to-day grind of existence in the never ending quest for money. As horrible as that sounds, it's worse to live it. And the statement of the youth being more sharp now than they will be later in life is so true. That is why I relish reading their opinions so much!
And I like the above alot. The era the music is made is irrevelant if it is stricking a chord within your soul. I personally avoided all new music in the 80's because I thought all big hair bands sucked. But my sig other has introduced me to Metallica and I love "Master of Puppets". It is a complete reflection of what's happening in my life right now. Madness, war memories, sanitariums - it all fits. (And before the hate comes, I'm sorry that Lars and Metallica wanted to make money on the music they created. )
That's EXACTLY what my dad says... BUT, he gets kindof proud when he hears me talking about hippies and Pink Floyd and specially Beatles...
cuz i was raised on it by my parents, who are the audience you think oldies belongs to. way to generalize, btw, i think the whole point is that it's for anyone and everyone. AND it's a reflection of quality a reminder that back in the day people had talent. and played their own instruments
Simple, new music really just sucks for the most part both lyric and music wise compared to classic rock.
Because I dont like to listen to punk rock and all the other crap that plays in fads. Why would anyone want to listen to the same old bar chord guitar riffs over and over and over again. I would rather shoot myself in the face
I like some new music Sam Roberts, the Thrills, Sloan etc..I like real Rock and Roll...Not "UHHHHHH, i hate you!" while screaming at me for 4 minutes....not to say that it is bad music, its just not my bag, im not into music...I love pure rock and roll.....I also beleive as most do, that the test of good music is if it can transcend an era...
Digital recording is starting a revolution in the music industry. People sold out just as much then as they do now. You are all scenesters. Why do young people listen to oldies? Because it's music, and they fucking can. You can go back to your genre specific garbage now.
I hate when people completely generalize new music as being "shit" and having no feeling. You people, I'm sorry to say this to you, but you haven't fucking heard all the new music. There are 100's upon 100's of genres, and I doubt anyone that says that all new music sucks has even heard 10% of what's out there today. Oh, and nice comment about Underoath at the bottom dude, they rule.
most of the music is really good and has a catchy tune. I listen to the oldies because i like the oldies i grew up listening to the oldies and other genres. Or else kids could like the tempo of the music, or it could be soothing who know there are a million and one reasons as to why kids listen to the oldies.
If it sounds good, nothing else matters, be it age, instruments used, ideaology, heritage... it's about the music, not rebellion or non-rebellion for me.
Hey this is to you people that say music of the past is better than music today, although yes most of the music today is horrible and you might be able to relate to some of it better you have to respect the talent it takes for some reggae artists like capleton, or some dj's, or even phish or the dead to put out their music.
