I do not understand this at all. Sounds like a huge waste...

Washington sends $1 food stamp checks to 250,000

    The Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Wash. The state of Washington sent out $1 checks to the 250,000 food stamp recipients in the state.

The director of the Community Services Division for the Department of Social and Health Services, Leo Ribas, says the checks mailed Feb. 17 trigger an additional $43 million in federal food benefits. They also connect recipients to an energy assistance program.

Ribas says the $1 check is a one-time move to leverage the federal money. He says next year the state will be able to trigger the federal assistance through a routine deposit in food stamp accounts.

Your current spending dictates your future budget. That's how the US government works. If you obligate a $12M budget this year and spend it all, you can justify a larger budget, more employees, larger workspace, etc NEXT year.

Now they can go to the fed and say they spent all their benefits funding and get a handout. I mean, stimulus check.

It makes perfect sense once you realize their objective is to create more debt and eventually bankruptcy. Then the Federal government can step in and "rescue" everyone from the chaos we will no doubt be told is the result of "incompetence."

By sending out $1 cheques to recipients, they tag how many people exactly are taking the money, knowing that more is to come, instead of just giving the money to the state, the federal government is writing cheques to the people that need it, so they can actually count heads and give it directly to the people that need it.

It's a way of giving money to the state, without the state giving it to the people with a slow, trickle down effect.

It's not bullshit at all. It's direct food stamps and funding.

The fact that a quarter of a million families in Washington are on food stamps didn't cause you concern?

Instead, you are talking about an "objective of creating more debt" when the cost increase per person in the US is 14 cents a person per year?

    Your answer doesn't pencil out.

Who is going to use $1 food stamps? What can you buy with a dollar? People are more likely to throw them in the trash than actually cash them in.

Even those who are on food stamps are calling it a waste of money.

Exactly. People who throw the food stamps out won't get any anticipated money. The people that cash them in, will be the people who are on the waiting list to receive more money.

They are setting up a system of direct aid, by putting out cheques of $1 to "open an account" with people who need food stamp money.

It's kind of like what you do when you go to open up a bank account. You deposit $1 into your new account, and when your first paycheque comes in, you deposit the forecast amount. That's what the government is doing for the state government. They are depositing $1 into people's names so that they can project and field a future deposit for food stamp money.

Sure, $1 doesn't do much - but it's not supposed to do anything but open up a direct fund system. So you know, the federal government actually knows that the money is being deposited directly into someone's account for food stamp money - they'd rather run it that way instead of giving a lump sum of money to the state and hope that it all goes eventually into food stamp money. It's more direct this way.

The recipients are getting $43 million in food benefits, directly. That's pretty good relief.

    ^^Exactly, that's good.

I don't know why everyone is complaining that it's nothing.

It's not 250,000 people, its 250,000 families. And $43M is $172 more per year or $3.30 a week more.

Allie I can't believe that YOU actually believe that gobshite. If they don't already know who is eligible and already receiving bennies, then they've been handing out free money. I know the PAC NW is rife with uneducated yokels, and welfare recipients, but they do have computers to track this stuff.

I seriously doubt Washington State blew a quarter mil plus expenses just to get a headcount. The optimist in me, as tiny as he may be, refuses to buy that.

Plus, I see no source validating what she said.

Where does it say that it's to confirm who to give the assistance to?

Food stamps need to be regulated anyway. There is some serious advantage being taken with welfare. And EBT cash should not even exist.

But where does it say anything about it being used as a headcount? Obviously they already know who the people are or else they wouldn't have been able to send the coupons out in the first place.

    No kidding.

Not only that, but here in Texas, they use "credit cards," not actual paper stamps/coupons, so what's up with mailing anything? They just do direct deposits to each reciepent. In fact, i dare say it would be rather hard to avoid taking the $1...

i've felt, for a long time, that the food stamp program should be expanded, to include any and all cleaning products, but that's just me.
