Hey, I'm wary of derailing this into some kind of "help Amy make dinner" thread....so I'll welcome any PM's (however, I'm sure it could be useful for others to keep the info here....up to you :))

I generally just hit the back bin. I have asked some little mama papa typed shops if they were going to throw anythingg out and if so could I have it or like do any little jobs for it and that has worked before (especially when traveling/living outside when warm food is really really special!)- but with chain shops they just won't give it and it's better to just hit the back bin- and the chain stores are the ones who waste/throw out the most food. It's crazy though, awesome stuff get's thown out constantly. Like I buy organic rice milk sometimes, and we got like 6 boxes of it from the bun last week all still sealed and good.

can also find clothes, movies, plants, furnature, etc. We all just sort of keep our eyes open and trade/give the stuff we don't want to people who do.

:) Sounds good. It's funny how the types of lifestyle about which people are most likely to sigh wistfully and remark on how they wish they could do such a thing, are infact the simplest, cheapest and easiest to obtain... (Well apart from the expensive types of lifestyle, obviously :p doh). I guess I mean the lifestyles with the most freedom, perhaps...

But what am I having for dinner?! :p

hmm.. you could do a bunch of things! i would probably cook up the rice and add the steamed carrots with some seasoning (any kind you like). steaming vegetables is the healthiest because it keeps the vitamins far more intact than other methods. i'd probably add the peas too. on the side, i love lightly frying thin potato slices, coconut oil is the healthiest, but olive or vegetable oil should be fine. have a look at this website: http://lifealive.com/menu.html it's the menu for my favorite vegetarian restaurant by far! i often find myself attempting to re-create their meals, which most of the time ends up being a big bowl of grains/legumes (rice, quinoa, lentils etc.) and lots of veggies and sometimes tofu. it's really filling, and leaves you feeling wonderful.

you could also combine it all and make a soup! that would taste a lot better with onions, though. if you go out, i'd pick up some of those, as well as some other vegetables, since carrots are your only non-starchy vegetable at the moment. try a dark leafy green, they're the best! kale is my favorite. it's very rich in vitamins as well. you could add that to your rice dish, or also to the soup! just let yourself be creative, and you'll end up making some wonderful veggie dishes :)

:) Thank-you....think I might do that rice thing...

I've got some kale in the garden actually...under 2 feet of snow lol

Oooh, there are also some pumkin seeds, almonds and couscous in the cupboard. Do nuts and seeds go off??

do they have a best-by date on them? if they do, they should be fine for a few weeks beyond that, but i'd be skeptical if it was much longer than that. stale nuts tend to get a shrivelled look to them. they keep longer if they're kept in the fridge (and you have to keep them refrigerated if they're raw) and in an airtight container. your best best is to smell/nibble a tiny bit, you'll be able to tell if they've gone rancid.

I'd just chuck it all in a pan and make a stew or a soup, cook the rice or cous cous and have the stew soupy thing with the rice :D nomnomnomnom... Thinking about chucking stuff in pans, I have some potatoes, and leeks and spring onions that need eating xD Leek and potato soup me tinks!!

Well here's what I did...cooked some rice, steamed sliced carrots along with some lemon rind, toasted some chopped almonds, pumkin seeds and sunflower seeds (though not enough of them) in soy sauce, fried some broccoli in sesame oil in the same pan, then put the nuts back in plus the carrots and rice, mixed it up and ate it. I'm now stuffed and my blood sugar is all wrong coz of too much carbohydrate so I'm also hungry in a way:p

Thanks for the motivation everyone:) Gonna definitely make more effort to improve my shopping and eating habits. Sorry for the slight derail... :) Still will welcome any PM advice though.

I spent about £50 a week on shopping for me, husband, dog and two cats. My diet is horrific. I buy a chicken once a week and potatoes, this is my sunday lunch. Then I might have mash and mint sauce one night, hotdogs another night (made from the best sausagemeat availiable which is Tesco's finest) and the rest of the money goes on snacks. Thing is, my kitchen is so small (5ft x 6ft) it's IMPOSSIBLE to have the space to cook decent meals so usually we just order kebabs in. It's a shame because I am a fantastic cook.

My diet is why I'm so fat and unhealthy. I walk 14 miles a week and I shift no weight. I really want to become veggie, not vegan, as I'd miss grilled haloumi cheese and sunday dinners too much. I'm moving next year and hope to get a bigger kitchen and cook more vegetarian based meals for myself but it's impossible at the moment. I miss being thin

beans make a good vegan pizza sauce layer. You could make pizza dough with flour, water, baking soda, salt? hmmm never tried that...might experiment tonight. But back to the pizza....the beans are layer 1...then if you had pineapple and bell peppers [my fav] throw that on top and voila. Its best with BBQ beans.
haha...sorry none of that was mentioned as stuff you had....
but what you did make sounds yummish.

Bit late to the party here

Meat eater, Id never choose to go veggie and I probably couldn't date a veggie / vegan it's a bit of a pariah for me tbh, not in a sort of "omg bleeding heart liberal" but just as an indicator of a fundamental set of shared values. I'm also of the opinion that raising kids vegetarian isn't necessarily in their best interests.

I'm still confused by why a cow doesn't stop lactating when the milk is no longer expressed like other mammals? Someone please explain this to me!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be raising my son a vegan when he's done w/ my milk. And I'll be joining him then since I'm only vegetarian atm. It is most definitely the healthiest way to live if you do it right. How can that not be in the childs best interest?

The cow does stop lactating. Our dairy cow back in the day didn't lactate constantly. Only when her hormones were right. Most dairy farms inject their cows with hormones so they lactate.

And since they use metal milking machines, their udders get all torn up, they get mastitis, and need antibiotic injections too.

    ....horrors....

spiritual dreadlocks here. there is no meat in my diet, but i do like eggs and i find it hard to give up cheese. i love to bake, especially with pot, so i find it real hard to give up eggs. i think there are substitutes for eggs, i dont know them though.

and soy milk is awesome, and rice milk too, and anyone who says different can suck a thumb. :)
