Oh yeah. I do have my own dog training/sitting business. I just don't make enough money at either job to leave the other. But I only work at the animal hospital part time now (as opposed to about 60 hours a week in the past), so I feel pretty good about that.

Missed this thread. Mixed feelings about it. Firstly I think that you need to get pet insurance so that if this happens again you can treat her. It's far less expensive than being dumped with a lump sum I'm paying £21 a month for my dog and two cats. I also would not give your dog baby asprin. Medications for humans shouldn't be used on animals period. As far as I'm aware yes it is an offence not to treat your dog.

You probably don't wanna hear this but if this was my puppy and it looked like it needed urgent attention which I couldn't afford I would've surrendered the dog by now. The longer you leave her to be treated the worse she could get. What if she'd broken it and it set like that? It could cause her problems in life. Sorry to sound harsh but it's with good intent, but if you can't afford to treat your dog then you *really* shouldn't have the dog.

People get animals, and then shit happens. I'm not trying to be bitchy with you dreadhead, I just want to set things straight. I got my dog when I was financially secure, and then became destitute for a while. He got very ill...luckily I had my parents to help me. But not all are so lucky.

You talk about the price of pet insurance in pounds. Maybe it's different across the pond, but premiums here in the US are VERY high (for one dog, let's say $90 a month) for REAL insurance. Most pet insurance here is a scam.

And baby aspirin is fine for dogs. It's used in animal hospitals all the time. Along with benedryl (diphenhydramine), gas-x (simethicone), and pepcid (famotidine). All in correct dosages, of course.

Regardless of whether you were financially secure or not, if you cannot afford to treat the animal when it needs it then you shouldn't have the animal. Fair enough, if it's a sprain or whatever but what if it's broken or something that needs surgery, she's left it unattended for a week and well in my eyes that's not right. I've always had that view and always will. I don't know whether it's different in the USA but in the UK it's generally bad to give meds meant for humans (even in the right dosage) to animals they preach that left right and centre here.

There are lots of human medications that can kill animals, yes. But where I work, we use some "human" medications on a daily basis. Sure, we could buy the same drug in a different package from Phizer Animal Health and pay 10 times as much. It's the SAME drug though. We buy them at the pharmacy next door.

But YES, once again, some human medications can kill an animal. For instance, never give your dog caffeine pills, or viagra, or tylenol. There are many others.

I really don't want to argue about this, because my feelings on animal health care are the same as my feelings on human health care. It should be readily available to everyone, regardless of income.

I agree with that animal health care should be availiable for everyone regardless but still it's not and until it is part of the responsibility of animal ownership is being able to care for the animal and give it vetenary attention. I'm sorry things are bad when it comes to welfare in the US but I can't help how I feel x

    ^That was your 420th post. :)

Of course you can't help how you feel. You're perfectly entitled to your opinion, and I respect that. I just felt the need to express my feelings as well.

I want to add my 2 cents in here.

My mother has 3 pets, all of which were strays that showed up on her property in pretty sorry shape and she fed them and cleaned them up and nursed them back to health as best she was able. She lives paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford health insurance for her pets.

So, dread, do you think it is better that she turn the animals over to the shelter knowing in all likelihood they will be killed? They are mutts and older and will NOT be adoptable. Many many animals in the USA in shelters are healthy but cannot be placed and as a result, are killed.

So do you take a risk or send them to certain death?

dreadhead I respect you in every sense of the word but I had gotten gucci when i was financially stable and over the past month I have become broke due to the fact that my boyfriend has had to go to emergency room 6 times and had to have surgery and my mother had to have surgery all within the past month. So I'm sorry that it hurts you to hear about a animal not being cared for urgently but what annie has said is true.

gucci has been improving she was using her leg slightly today. She will use her leg when she has to potty. Her knee is starting to move more without any pain. I have been trying to ever so gently keep her joints moving every 6-8 hours to keep them from locking up.

anaga-every pet except the hamster and fish were all kept from being put in the county shelter. I really believe if you are going to get a pet you should rescue one instead of buying one from a breeder.

I like the local pet stores in my area because the animals they get are from the SPCA. I think mutts make better pets anyway.

Purebreds have all sorts of genetic abnormalities as a result of centuries of inbreeding. Did you know that every bulldog is born by cesarian because they have been bred to have such narrow hips, they are physically incapable of giving birth? Breeders propigate this sort of nonsense.

    People are weird.
