I have always hated the label "Hippie" and have found the various answers to be quite interesting. As a child of the 60's I've done the whole "thing" - drugs, sex, and rock & roll but now that I'm older I beleive that it is a more cerebral state of being and trancends labels and stereotypes. I prefer to think of it more as a "gentleness of spirit" that is based on tolerance and kindness towards others, both human and animal. These qualities are more ingrained in my soul than an overt atempt to create some sort of persona. People always seem to label me as an old "hippie" when they meet me and it's not because of any overt sign - my "Freak Flag" isn't flying (well, at least not on the outside, lol!) - rather it is because of something that just emenates from my spirit. Back in the day tho - "hippie" wasn't anything we aspired to. It was much more important to be a "head".
ok, i logged on to the oxford website to learn about the word and term "hippie." since oxford is the offical source for the english language. this is a for pay website that cost $ 200.00 (u.s.a. funds) per-year. you can't use the site if you don't purchase a subscription. the website is use by people (like myself) who must be percise with words in english. it is interesting that oxford defines 'hippie' starting with a note that reads: 'especially in the 1960's.' then oxford gives the 1960's definition of hippie. so, what oxford is saying is this: that the word hippie has evolved from it's 1960's definition and (repeat, AND) is still evolving so fast that, a fixed definition for the word cannot, be safely made, since the 1960's definition. i guess, if you want some-kind of present day definition of 'hippie,' you would need to do some research in the fields of anthropology and socialology. yet, don't expect for whatever definition you find to stay fix for long! i would say, that since hippie is a subculture. it would be best to put the word in with a megaculture. that megaculture would be labled as: alternative culture, conter-culture, underground culture or, some other term that would fit in with the terms i gave above.
I'm a hippy because that is what everyone calls me. But in reality I'm just me. I have long unkempt hair, I wear moccasins, a 60 some year old leather vest, tye dye shirts and even some pants that I tye dye myself, I always wear a bandana, I walk around with a joint in my ear most of the time, and I live in a tent down by the local river. I don't agree with our government the way it is currently and I do everything I can to make things better for others and myself. If that is what makes me a hippy then I'm a hippy.
There wasn't a really perfect option for me so I didn't click one. I am a hippy not because of how I dress or the music I listen to but because I am such a nonconformist. I don't buy into the 'american dream' of outdoing the neighbors and having all the crap 'they' say you should have. I am a hippy because a lot of the silly things people worry about I don't care about(who people are screwing, what paris hiltonwore in jail). peace Delfynasa I dress hippy and listen to old music just because I like it
im gonna have to say all of those are what makes me a hippie. i dont know which one would be more me, ive tried the drugs, love nature, dress like well me(hippie), hate the government, love love love the beatles ; jimi hendrix ; janis ; grateful dead ; & so many others. I walk around barefoot all the time, love being outdoors, wear bandanas/headbands pretty much all the time. & i just love how every other hippie is your friend too eace:
I'm into music and smoking and don't recall ever really thinking of myself as a hippy. I don't think that's what the whole idea should be about anyway. Hippy is too broad a word and ends up meaning something different to each person. Who wants to risk being defined by a word, especially with all the fake 'hippies' out there?
"Hippy" is how I describe myself to people who don't hang around enough to find out what I am for themselves.
Hippies don't actually exist in this day and age. If they do, they are in EXTREME hiding because I have yet to see any real ones. They died off long ago, but they DEFINITELY knew what life was about. They got it. Obviously I was born at the wronnnnnnng time haha
There are lots of people today who have similar ideas what life is about. It's not a privilege of hippies to dig life.
Well, i don't know if i'm really a hippy, but theres things about me that do and don't make me one. I love drugs, I love peace, i think war is just evil at it's finest, (even though i don't like war i believe that it needs to be done to defend our country like on south park) i never get in fights unless i'm cornered into one. I hate the government, i hate authority (i know its needed to some extent though to keep things in order) The thing i hate the most is how the gov lets food get pesticides and doesn't care about people they just care about money. I don't think i listen to much hippie music besides the beatles. I love driving, i don't like how i pollute the enviroment by driving but in my ignorant perspective its worth it cause you only live once.
I guess if I have to have a label then Hippy comes closest. For me it's about how I think. Oh, and all of the poll points.
