Say Hey. Okay...for those of you who read the marijuana forum I posted a thread in there about my friend who is in a health class and is the only one basically open minded to alternative ways. Well she is having a problem again but this time on vegetarianism. She is the only vegetarian in the class and mentioned tuesday (just found out because i was out of town a few days) that vegetarian was a better alternative than eating meat as is her right of oppinion. Well her college teacher again acting out is critisizing her and asking...how? how? You can become malnurished if not taking the proper vitamins and die. She has enlisted me and my husband to help her find some information online about how humans were meant to be vegetarians and the health benefits. I am asking you guys if you could give me some info and your views on this subject as well. Peace for now and thanks.
It can be very tough to be singled out in class, when your fellow students and even professor are attacking you. Arguing over whether humans were "meant" to be vegetarians is a go-nowhere fight that does not do the true merits of vegetarianism justice. Drop the argument over cavemen and focus on the fact that today, the vast majority of meat-eating in developed countries today is done for tastebuds, not survival. Organizations such as the American Dietetic Association have endorsed well-balanced vegetarian diets as nutritious, healthy, and appropriate http://www.eatright.org/Public/GovernmentAffairs/17084.cfm . Vegan Outreach also provides decent acess to nutrition information www.veganoutreach.org . Her teacher's argument that vegetarians will waste away and die if they don't chow down on steak and McNuggets is of course, ridiculous, and it isn't hard to refute such a silly statement.
Even when I ate meat....I wasn't ignorant enough to believe that vegetarianisim was bad for you....I always knew it was the much much better choice for health....it took the cruelty side of things vs the health side of things for me to change though.....there is SOOO much info out there on the negitive health effects of meat and the very positive effects with a veggie diet.
i experienced this to in my college wellness class. we were doing a unit on nutrition and it just came up in discussion that i was vegetarian, and the next thing i knew, other students were screaming at me and the prof was calling me "foolish". i did not argue the benefits of vegetarianism, under the circumstances. they were obviously not open to opposing viewpoints. i just kept my mouth shut, and became bitter and disillusioned, a festering resentment that continues even now to eat away at my soul. :$
to answer your question ryu...i am a vegetarian turned vegan. baking a vegan chocolate cake right now! yum! been one for about 8 years now. i know few books i can direct my friend to but no websites and i can chant my views all i want but her teacher would want written and documented proof. thanks all for your help. peace and love.
I've been a vegetarian for almost five years and I'm still shocked everyday about how people react when I tell them I'm one of "them". I never thought what you ate would ever affect your social standing, but I shouldn't be too surprised at least not here in the Midwest. Living in a relatively small town and going to a relatively conservative University, I know of one vegetarian and one vegan and they both feel my pain. I've never once discriminated against an omnivore, but I've been discriminated against countless times! I feel like I'm constantly defending the life decisons I have made...none of us should have to feel that way! VEGETARIANS UNITE!
yeah...i dig what you are saying...especially in this day and age when it is not uncommon to see odd peircings and different lifestyles...actually most of the population of america is vegetarian...there is a good chunk of us.
