Stoners vs. Potheads

Ok, so... a lot of people have been asking me lately, what I think the difference is in potheads and stoners. (Ok, only like 3 people but still... more than normal!)

My response is:

Potheads do nothing but think about pot all the time. Aside from eating, sleeping, and playing video games potheads are pretty much always focused on pot. Growing it, smoking it, advocating for it and talking about it a lot. Don't get me wrong, this is a very respectable position I believe. Potheads are dedicated in the most passionate of ways. It's admirable the way they focus on a cause and fight for it AND live it. Most of their friends are stoners and they tend to mentor blooming potheads. They smoke at least 3 times a day and can be known to aim for being high at least half of the day.

Stoners on the other hand are slightly less dedicated than potheads. Stoners are more like your evening smokers. They spend their time doing other things besides thinking about smoking pot. While they have graduated past "Occaional/Rare Smoker", "Social Smoker" and "Noob" they haven't quite fall completely into a pot oriented lifestyle. Generally they smoke at least once a day compared to the pothead who attempts to smoke at least 3 times a day and more. They have at least 1 friend who is also a stoner and other friends who smoke occasionally. They typicailly don't like to hang out with non-smokers but never would be rude enough to turn away a friend.

So, I assume this will spark some conversation. What do you guys think? Is it acurate, too harsh, a little over the top? I've also come up with other levels of heirarchy in the pot world, but I think these are the two that hit home with me the best.

 

i don't see a difference.

they both smoke weed, some are just more 'stereotypical stoner' than others.

also, there are like 80 of these threads, and you're probably gonna get flamed.

Just like there's a million names and slang use for pot.

 

I'm not asking for the definition. It's my philosophical theory! At least it is now that I'm high.

 

There is a huge difference, and I am pretty sure this topic was brought up recently.
First of all, I disagree with your definitions, dixie... i will sum it up for you.

Stoners are kids looking to fit that label, they are the ones who love to sport things with "420" on it, the ones who shun resin. They are ones who think it is cool to smoke pot, and in some instances do it to fit in with the "hippies". I could elaborate, but I am sure you get the picture.

Potheads on the other hand differ because they are more discreet. I tend to view potheads as more experienced smokers, older as well. Though that observation is purely derived from my own observation. They may go intervals without smoking, but do no turn down even a roach.
While you did make a good point I agree with you on, I believe it is worth adding and mentiong: It's admirable the way they focus on a cause and fight for it and live it.


EDIT: A stoner loves to have the nice, flashy paraphanelia.. while a pothead may smoke with papers for twenty years.

Yep, which is why I said I disagreed.
I, personally view stoners as the kids at school wearing the 420 shit and a peace hemp necklace saying, "Dude, after school you wanna come to my house after school and listen to the White Album backwards? I have some Puprle Kush and we can make an Apple Pipe".

To me..


Stoner = Chill person who smokes alot, probably wears stereotypical clothing, and uses alot of stereotypical slang.

Pothead = Life revolves around weed, generally are assholes and dumbshits, complains about not being high, will smoke any amount or quality of green even if it wont get them high.

snob



the list goes on for awhile.. theres alot of different types of maijuana users.

most of my life is dedicated to weed, but I dont go around telling people I smoke weed or wearing 420 shirts. if someone comes up to me in school and asks me if I smoke weed, I generally say no, unless its someone who plans to smoke with me

I do have hair down to almost my nipples though, and wear tie-dye, grateful dead, sublime, pink floyd, jimi hendrix shirts etc. I don't wear them to make people think I'm cool. I wear them because I actually listen to all of those bands.

3 of my friends got sortof "busted" for situations like that.

they went around telling people they smoke bud, and then somebody told the principal and school detective and they all had there bags searched. they all had cigarettes in there bags, and one kid had a few adderall and vicodin, and got expelled and put on probation.

and I have cigarettes in my bag everyday.

I dont have to worry about that now, seeing as I'm cyber schooled.

 

pothead is usually a term used by people who don't smoke and are ignorant, like some people think that if a person smokes 1 or 2 times a week they're a pothead... it's kind of an insult, i've never heard anyone tell me that they are a pothead

a stoner more of what i would describe myself as, someone who enjoys the cannabis culture, loves smoking bud, but focuses on other things like school

 

IMO:

Stoners center their lives around getting stoned.

Potheads still get shit done but just smoke pot a lot.

 

I think my opinion differs from most of yours because more of experience is with significantly older crowds.
IME, a pothead is not an insult. A stoner is.

I don't want to argue with anyone, or claim I am right or know better.... because I don't.
I am simply stating things as they have been the last 9 years I have been in this Cannabis culture.
