Just like the title says. Not just good song lyrics, but lyrics that stand up on their own as amazing poetry that set a mood/atmosphere with the words alone. Post your favorites. "Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight. Red is grey and yellow white But we decide which is right." -The Moody Blues "Shes a moonchild, Gathering the flowers in a garden. Lovely moonchild, Drifting on the echoes of the hours. Sailing on the wind in a milk white gown, Dropping circle stones on a sundial. Playing hide and seek with the ghosts of dawn, Waiting for a smile from a sunchild." -King Crimson
"And which is an illusion." and it continues... Pinprick holes in a colourless sky, Let insipid figures of light pass by, The mighty light of ten thousand suns, Challenges infinity and is soon gone. Night time, to some a brief interlude, To others the fear of solitude. Brave Helios wake up your steads, Bring the warmth the countryside needs. that poem = ace.
"Impassioned lovers wrestle as one, Lonely man cries for love and has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young." yup!
She tears the hole up even wider Lets all the darkness up inside her Holy old, yeah, you're mine Your everything is mine Without, without a doubt Without, without a doubt Hey, where the fuck were you when my lights went out? Yeah, you don't want to look at it Yeah, you don't want to look at it Without, without a doubt Come on and let me out Hey, where the fuck were you when my lights went out? Yeah, you don't want to look at it Yeah, you don't want to look at me Come on and let me out Come on and let me out Yeah, tie a soul to you when your life goes down Time flies when you're falling down I spread my rot all over this town And every one of you looks the same And every one of you feels the same -"Garbadge Man" by Hole This song really strikes me because it touches on a lot of subjects that I deal with or have dealt with in the past. The line "No you don't want to look at it" really hits me because it perfectly describes the way my abusive dad acted when I was younger. He didn't want to acknowledge the psychological problems he caused me or wanted to blame them on me. The "where the fuck were you when my lights went out?" line also carries a lot of meaning for me, because I've felt that the people in my life who I should be able to rely on have always let me down. I also really like the line "Time flies when you're falling down" since it seems pretty clever.
Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown/Wolf Parade etc. is probably my favourite song writer at the moment. I really like the way he uses these really grand metaphors to describe things so mundane and sad. These are some of his lyrics from the Sunset Rubdown song: The Taming Of The Hands That Came Back To Life. It deals with the feelings of hopelessness that come from wanting to create something great, but being totally uninspired. "When the sails start flying in the wind I say; 'cool, that looks cool, now do you think the second movement has too many violins?" And later: "She said 'my sails are flying in the wind', I said: 'Can I use that in a song?' She said: 'I mean the end begins', I said: 'I know.....can I use that too?'
I don't live today Well, I lived in magic solitude of cloudy-looking mountains and a lake made out of crystal raindrops. Roamin' thru space, two thousand years ago, I've seen the city of Atlantis sinking into eternal darkness... Somewhere in the blue distance are those long forgotten trees of yore. A broken violin floatin' alone in december darkness everywhere and nothing more. Symbol, strange melancholy, painted torrid colours to a sky of green. Candle, breathing one night only, far away, in chillness, bleak, unseen. Drifting galley, ghostlike shadow, set sail to catch and kill the time. Echoes wandering down an endless meadow, search for a thing... sublime... Fly to the rainbow, fly away, so far away... Therion - Fly to the rainbow, slightly altered lyrics. Originally this song is from the Scorpions. Masters of war by Bob Dylan always gives me goosebumps, just can't help it. And they're not nearly my fav lyrics of him, it just does something to me I guess: Like Judas of old You lie and deceive A world war can be won You want me to believe But I see through your eyes And I see through your brain Like I see through the water That runs down my drain You fasten the triggers For the others to fire Then you set back and watch When the death count gets higher You hide in your mansion As young people's blood Flows out of their bodies And is buried in the mud You've thrown the worst fear That can ever be hurled Fear to bring children Into the world For threatening my baby Unborn and unnamed You ain't worth the blood That runs in your veins How much do I know To talk out of turn You might say that I'm young You might say I'm unlearned But there's one thing I know Though I'm younger than you Even Jesus would never Forgive what you do Let me ask you one question Is your money that good Will it buy you forgiveness Do you think that it could I think you will find When your death takes its toll All the money you made Will never buy back your soul And I hope that you die And your death'll come soon I will follow your casket In the pale afternoon And I'll watch while you're lowered Down to your deathbed And I'll stand o'er your grave 'Til I'm sure that you're dead
They hung a sign up in out town "if you live it up, you won't live it down" So, she left Monte Rio, son Just like a bullet leaves a gun With charcoal eyes and Monroe hips She went and took that California trip Well, the moon was gold, her Hair like wind She said don't look back just Come on Jim Oh you got to Hold on, Hold on You got to hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right here You gotta hold on Well, he gave her a dimestore watch And a ring made from a spoon Everyone is looking for someone to blame But you share my bed, you share my name Well, go ahead and call the cops You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops She said baby, I still love you Sometimes there's nothin left to do Oh you got to Hold on, hold on You got to hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you got to Just hold on. Well, God bless your crooked little heart St. Louis got the best of me I miss your broken-china voice How I wish you were still here with me Well, you build it up, you wreck it down You burn your mansion to the ground When there's nothing left to keep you here, when You're falling behind in this Big blue world Oh you go to Hold on, hold on You got to hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right here You got to hold on Down by the Riverside motel, It's 10 below and falling By a 99 cent store she closed her eyes And started swaying But it's so hard to dance that way When it's cold and there's no music Well your old hometown is so far away But, inside your head there's a record That's playing, a song called Hold on, hold on You really got to hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right here And just hold on. -"Hold On" by Tom Waits
The Rules of Life are written here: Mama told me when I was young Come sit beside me, my only son And listen closely to what I say. And if you do this It will help you some sunny day. Take your time... dont live too fast, Troubles will come and they will pass. Go find a woman and youll find love, And dont forget son, There is someone up above. And be a simple kind of man. Be something you love and understand. Be a simple kind of man. Won't you do this for me son, If you can? Forget your lust for the rich mans gold All that you need is in your soul, And you can do this if you try. All that I want for you my son, Is to be satisfied. And be a simple kind of man. Be something you love and understand. Be a simple kind of man. Won't you do this for me son, If you can? Boy, dont you worry... youll find yourself. Follow you heart and nothing else. And you can do this if you try. All I want for you my son, Is to be satisfied. And be a simple kind of man. Be something you love and understand. Be a simple kind of man. Won't you do this for me son, If you can? Simple Man: Lynyrd Skynyrd Amazing lyrics, they really dig on my heart!
'and if my thought-dreams could be seen/they'd probably put my head in a guillotine/but it's alright ma/it's life and life only' With all this extra stressin The question I wonder is after death, after my last breath When will I finaly get to rest? Through this supression they punish the people that's askin questions And those that possess, steal from the ones without possesions The message I stress: to make it stop study your lessons Don't settle for less - even the genius asks-es questions Be grateful for blessings Don't ever change, keep your essence The power is in the people and politics we address Always do your best, don't let the pressure make you panic And when you get stranded And things don't go the way you planned it Dreamin of riches, in a position of makin a difference Politicians and hypocrites, they don't wanna listen If I'm insane, it's the fame made a brother change It wasn't nuttin like the game It's just me against the world I can't let you be Cause your beauty won't allow me Wrapped in white sheets Like an angel from a bedtime story Shut out what they say Cause your friends are fucked up anyway And when they come around Somehow they feel up and you feel down When we were kids We hated things our parents did We listened low To casey kasem's radio show That's when friends were nice To think of them just makes you feel nice The smell of grass in spring And october leaves cover everything Have you forgotten how to love yourself? I can't believe all the good things that you do for me Sat back in a chair Like a princess from a faraway place Nobody's nice When you're older your heart turns to ice And shut out what they say They're too dumb to mean it anyway When we were kids We hated things our sisters did Backyard summer pools And christmases were beautiful And the sentiment Of coloured mirrored ornaments And the open drapes Look out on frozen farmhouse landscapes Have you forgotten how to love yourself?
Well I looked into a house I once lived in Around the time I first went on my own When the roads were as many as the places I had dreamed of And my friends and I were one Now the distance is done and the search has begun Ive come to see where my beginnings have gone Oh the walls and the windows were still standing And the music could be heard at the door Where the people who kindly endured my odd questions Asked if I came very far And when my silence replied they took me inside Where their children sat playing on the floor Well we spoke of the changes that would find us farther on And it left me so warm and so high But as I stepped back outside to the grey morning sun I heard that highway whisper and sigh Are you ready to fly? And I looked into the faces all passing by Its an ocean that will never be filled And the house that grows older and finally crumbles That even love cannot rebuild Its a hotel at best, youre here as a guest You oughta make yourself at home while youre waiting for the rest Well I looked into dream of the millions That one day the search will be through Now here I stand at the edge of my embattled illusions Looking into you The great song traveler passed through here And he opened my eyes to the view And I was among those who called him a prophet And I asked him what was true Until the distance had shown how the road remains alone Now Im looking in my life for a truth that is my own Well I looked into the sky for my anthem And the words and the music came through But words and music can never touch the beauty that Ive seen Looking into you -- and thats true... Jackson Browne
Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son? Oh, where have you been, my darling young one? I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains, I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways, I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests, I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans, I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard, And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son? Oh, what did you see, my darling young one? I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it, I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it, I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin', I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin', I saw a white ladder all covered with water, I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken, I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children, And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son? And what did you hear, my darling young one? I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin', Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world, Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin', Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin', Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin', Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter, Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley, And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son? Who did you meet, my darling young one? I met a young child beside a dead pony, I met a white man who walked a black dog, I met a young woman whose body was burning, I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow, I met one man who was wounded in love, I met another man who was wounded with hatred, And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son? Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one? I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin', I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest, Where the people are many and their hands are all empty, Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters, Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison, Where the executioner's face is always well hidden, Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten, Where black is the color, where none is the number, And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it, And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it, Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin', But I'll know my song well before I start singin', And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
There's a storm outside, and the gap between crack and thunder Crack and thunder, is closing in, is closing in The rain floods gutters, and makes a great sound on the concrete On a flat roof, there's a boy leaning against the wall of rain Aerial held high, calling "come on thunder, come on thunder" Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul It's a monsoon, and the rain lifts lids off cars Spinning buses like toys, stripping them to chrome Across the bay, the waves are turning into something else Picking up fishing boats and spewing them on the shore The boy is hit, lit up against the sky, like a sign, like a neon sign And he crumples, drops into the gutter, legs twitching The flood swells his clothes and delivers him on, delivers him on Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul There's four new colors in the rainbow An old man's taking polaroids But all he captures is endless rain, endless rain He says listen, takes my head and puts my ear to his And I swear I can hear the sea Somtimes, when I look in your eyes I can see your soul (I can reach your soul) (I can touch your soul) Sometimes

Sorry dude. Before you slip into unconcsciousness I'd like to have another kiss Another flashing chance at bliss another kiss, another kiss The days are bright and filled with pain, enclose me in your gentle rain The time you ran was too insane we'll meet again, we'll meet again. Oh tell me where your freedom lies, the streets are fields that never die Deliver me from reasons why you'd rather cry, I'd rather fly. The crystal ship is being filled, a thousand girls a thousand thrills A million ways to spend your time when we get back I'll drop a line!
Well, I gotta say, I did use to love that song. Especially after my first girlfriend broke up with me.
