i've only been there for a little while, but i love eugene. i visited there and then moved there soon after. i don't know about where you come from, but one thing i appreciated was that cost of living is low in eugene. you can get a nice place, even some land, and still live comfortably. people complain about the lack of jobs or the difficulty finding a job, but i didn't have a problem, as i am a trained professional. it's always easier, i think, if you have a field of expertise. however, i have a good number of friends who are artists and musicians and the like, and they get by. eugene is full of beautiful spots, and it's got the college, so it's academic. the market is splendid. people are very friendly. i particularly like the whittaker (sp?) neighborhood ~ it's full of pretty houses, artsy people, a healthfood shop/cafe. like i said, i'm pretty new to the area, but i'm happy and comfortable. the weather can be a bitch, but again, it must get a bit rough too in idaho! it's rainy but relatively mild, and summers are beautiful. there are lots of artists walks and concerts and stuff. i'd recommend that you come and visit. if you don't know anyone, there are two hostels that i know of which are like twenty or less bucks a night. one is even in whittaker!
The cost of living is okay, but likely higher than Idaho (check out craigslist to get a price idea). The weather is great during the Spring and Summer and early Fall, and there is always something to do during those times. Like Saturday Market or concerts in the park. In the Winter you feel like you're getting webbed feet There is a wide variety of night life and lots of local bands. It can be pretty fun, but like every city or town it does have its issues. There is a large homeless population, and petty theft (like cds from your car) is an issue, and jobs can be hard to come by. Check out the local paper (http://registerguard.com) and you can get an idea of the local politics, opinions, crime statistics, economy etc. Eugene is like most places, it all depends on where you live. Some areas are nice, and others pretty run down. Just drive on over for a visit and check things out. The hostels are cheap, but remember you have to be gone most of the day when you stay there. I cannot remember the exact times sorry.
The above posts pretty much sum it up. Eugene is a great community for a head. I actually recommend living in one of the nearby rural communities though. I've been doing that for 30 years and I love it here. I moved away twice, and moved back both times because of the people here. Lastly, the Oregon Country Fair is nearby. Also known as the Hippie Fair, it is definitely a must-do counterculture experience. Peace, love, and a fat doobie.
my house sold yesterday, were driving there tomorrow... Hope to find something to buy. thanks for the responses...
Was over there last week for a visit to check it out and we think its great. Problem were having is no one wants to rent to us even though I can pay the full 6 months lease up front cause we will be un-employed upon arrival. We just sold another house here and want to rent there so we can check out fixxer uppers first hand while were there, if anyone knows of somebody that wants to take our money pass the word along. just a one bedroom place is fine for now. thanks Mike.
Things I love: The bike paths alton-baker park (and other parks) the community gardens proximity to the coast and mountains spencer's butte the community Things I could do without: loud university students Traffic jams during U of O football/basketball games the roads are difficult to navigate
We live basically b/t Eugene and Portland. We way prefer to go south to Eugene for small venue concerts (not that there are none in Portland), and the Saturday Market. We love the laid back vibe. Lots of social activities and groups. Great hub - and a smaller airport than Kona! The smallest commercial airport I have ever been to. Nice. I just told WoodstockChild if it doesn't workout in Berkeley, CA to thumb it north to Eugene.
I have several Bros and Sis's in Eugene, we all used to live in a commune outside of Canyonville. When the commune land was sold out from under us most went to Eugene. In fact they are part of the OCF every year. I don't not like to name names of course, to protect the guilty (heh heh).. but they know who they are, so no need for names. Bright Blessings Family in Eugene.. sh
Also if you get your OMMP card we have a forum site for Oregon OMMP cardholders at oregonmedicalmarijuanaplus.com .
