Age of first period getting youger?

We've all heard the reports that the age girls start menstruation is getting younger. My sister and I would like to gather some data to see if that's true.

My niece, who just turned 11 late last month (Dec. 2008), got her first period last week. When my sister told me, I was a little shocked, thinking it was quite young. She said she thought the same thing but according to my niece, about half the girls in her class have already started their periods! We were both around 14 when we first got ours and as far as we can remember most of the other girls our age were getting them at about the same time.

We would like to know what year you were born and what age you were (years and months, if you can remember... I think we all can) when you had your first period. Here is our data:

I was born in 1961 and had my first period at 14 years and 2 months.
My sister was born in 1965 and first period was at 13 years 9 months.
My niece was born in 1997 and first period was at 11 years 1 month.

i was born in 1991 and got my period at 15 years 1 month.

 

I was born in 1986 and had my first period at 14 and a half. My mom was born in 1953 and got hers at age 10. Someone I know, born in '57, didn't get hers until 16. My personal opinion is that it's attributed to do diet, nutritional and environmental factors. From what I've read, it has gone up and down throughout history. First of all, thanks to all who posted their data. I apologize for the pervs who seem to get off on this sort of thing.

Over the weekend my niece went to shop and hang out with two of her close friends. She told them about getting here period and asked if they had gotten theirs yet. One friend, who is a little old for the class, got hers in December of last year, at 11 years 3 months. The other girl will turn 11 in March and has not started yet.

I also talked to a friend of mine a few blocks from me. She was born in 1976 and had her first at 12 years 7 months. Her daughter was born in 1997 (will turn 12 in May) and has not yet started.
