Has anyone read this book? Carol Adams is an excellent author and she makes an interesting argument. The book that I really loved though is her Inner Art of Vegetarianism.
Yes, I've read this book. I own this and a couple of other books by Carol Adams. I have also seen her slideshow, which expands on the themes of her book. While I don't agree with every point she raises in the book, it has definately made me more aware of this type of mutual denigration. Just the other day I heard about a restaurant that advertised its big chicken sandwich with signs and t-shirts reading "I ate a fat chick." I think her books are worthwhile reading for open-minded veg*ns and animal advocates. If nothing else, it will make you more attentive to the value messages that appear in advertising.
My sister was telling me about this at a Peta ralley she went to they were talking about it...Its really crazy when you stop and look at it...its very true and very scary. The other one she mentioned wich are both related to one another equally is the pornography of meat. There is a link between abuse of woman and abuse of animals. Woman and meat have been classed togeather for a long long time. I am sure we have all herd a woman described as a fine piece of meat...and I know we have all seen ads for animals wich are going to be eaten, done up in seductive poses and sexy clothing....bikinis or wearing makeup even. A meat eating culture teaches men to love being macho and to hate women, to love steaks and to hate vegetarians and these books break it all down.
I agree entirely with these points. Abuse is abuse is abuse, so it shouldn't really be all that surprising if this sort of link exists. Dehumanisation of women is not all that different from dehumanisation of animals. However, I do have a dark sense of humour, so I have to admit that I laughed at this.... :&
I definatly did not come anywhere close to doing Carol Adams book justice, I haven't read it but I have read about it. I do want to get my hands on it....it really sounded like some out there crazy talk, I laughed myself when it was first mentioned to me. I totaly support the feminist movement.....but I did kinda feel that this was going to be an out there attack on men....but after seeing the proof and realising it has been out there blatently under our nose all this time and we just never stoped to realise it I have totaly chanegd my mind. I mean look at the pornography of meat....we see animals dressed up all the time....many times in sexy poses and wearing makeup.....and we know sex sells....but we diden't put togeather they were actualy trying to use sex to sell sheep, cows...ect
Her books are great, unfortunately her slide show didnt quite expnd the concepts of her book, rather they just hammered them into the ground. I wish she had expanded it to politics too. I actaully found a poster that might help her do that, which was an ad form the 60s for young republicans, showing an elephant in boxing attire, all gung ho. Notice how nobody actually eats elephants here...
. I am currrently looking for a good book to read......could you tell me more about the concensous (sp?) of this book? I'd apprechiate it.
