This is just my experience. When I was little, I pretty much only drank tap water. Then when I was about 10 years old, I pretty much drank equal amounts of both tap and bottled water.
This past summer, I went to the Dominican Republic. They advise you not to drink any tap water there. So... for two weeks all I had was bottled purified water.
When I came home I still kept up with drinking just bottled water for like two days, because it was what I became used of. Then, I had a cup of tap water... and it made me so sick! I just thought... "well.. maybe it's my body getting used to American cooking, and products again". But, I refrained from drinking tap water. About a week later.. I had another cup of tap water.. and again it made me really sick. The same thing happened to the rest of my family.
Sooooo. since July, we've only been drinking bottled water.
The only thing I've noticed, looking back. Since I started drinking more bottled water (about 7-8 years now), my teeth have gotten less strong. I think this is because majority of bottled waters arent fortified with flouride, where as tap water is.
Yeah, but I swear by tap water now. :)

I have come to this thought that tap water strengthens your organism and kind of alters your health in all ways, 'cause you get lots of natural stuff from water, which is considered bad, because it is not "pure", but I think all that bacteria and minerals, whatever, are good for you. I also drank purified water for a while until I had a hitchiking month when I drank only tap water, because, well, I'm not a freekin' idiot to BUY WATER. Ok, it made me sick first, but then I became immune (they say - what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger). Now I'm ok with drinking tap water, not purified or anything.

"purified" water still has some bacteria in it. Tests on bottled water have found massive colonies of bacteria living in the water, because of the time the water sits on the shelf, allowing the few bacteria to multiply. Tap water is actually cleaner.

That being said, I drink bottled water often because it seems to taste better. I don't think there is really any significant clinical difference between bottled and tap water.

I live in a semi rural area where each house has a private well. There are no sewers (we all have septic tanks) and no piped in water of any kind (you have to go almost half a mile to get to a fire hydrant) Our water is SO DISGUSTING you couldn't pay me to drink it. Even the people who have tried reverse osmosis do not get good results. Add to that the fact that we had an E Coli contamination about 10 years ago, and a couple of people (mostly babies whose moms were making formula with our disgusting water) ended up hospitalized. EVERYBODY in the neighborhood got sick, and that is when we totally stopped drinking our water.

Our water, although now supposedly clear of E Coli, is still undrinkable, unless you enjoy visible iron and sulfur in your drink.

We only drink bottled water. One of my kids can only drink certain brands. Sigh. It sucks. But you gotta live.

I believe that historically nobody has ever lived in places where drinking water is unavailable. That makes me wonder - how comes Maggie Sugar's home is where it is.

people have and do live in areas where water is unavailable, Osama, as you should well know. Many people in the middle eastern deserts have to travel fairly long distances to obtain any potable water.

If you're going to drink bottled water exclusively and especially if your kids are drinking only bottled water, you should get some flouride drops to add to the bottled water for your and your kid's teeth sake. Of course, some people consider flouride a toxin, but it does help fortify your teeth's enamel.

Huh? We live in an unincorporated part of Illinois. Water is "availble." There is "drinking water" (people have had private wells since the beginning of time, and there is a river just a few hundred yards from our house) from a private well, but the water is NOT SAFE. Our county has some of the worst water in the country.

There used to be farms where our house is. Years ago, people died all the time from well contamination. Our area hasn't been updated, and as we are not part of a municipality, piped in water really isn't an option. (and even if it was, it would run us about $20,000 per house to bring in, we may have to incorporate into a very corrupt village, and EVERYBODY in the area would have to agree to it, and most cannot afford that.)

BTW, I don't do flouride in water. I do believe consuming it is toxic. Floridated water gives me migraines as well. My kid's teeth are really healthy.

The main things in tap water that are not in bottled water is dissolved ions. Iron, calcium, chlorine, copper, fluoride, etc( pretty much everything on the periodic table of elements). Even bottled water has these to, just to a lesser extent. If your worried about the stuff just get a carbon filter like pur, or britta. Even these still have ions in them. The only true pure water is deionized and they don't sell that at the store.
