First strike: 17 dead as Obama aims missiles at Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Taliban enclaves

    CNN Wire

President Barack Obama waged the first military action of his tenure Friday with missile strikes in the region.

Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf said of the airstrikes, 'Policies don't change with personalities.'

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - The Pakistan military's top spokesman said attacks against suspected terrorists by pilotless U.S. drones - such as two alleged to have occurred Friday - are ''counterproductive'' because they undercut his country's efforts to oust militants from Pakistan's tribal region.

Seventeen people were killed Friday in the two missile strikes in the ungoverned tribal areas. One government official and two military officials said they were U.S. attacks. They are the first such strikes since President Barack Obama took office on Tuesday.

''It helps us in no way conducting our operations,'' Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told CNN's Reza Sayah. ''We are trying to create to wean away the tribe at large from the militant component of the tribe. But it diminishes the line which divides the militant component and the tribe at large.''

''We face much more difficulty as a result of drone strikes, and we have conveyed our position on that'' to the United States, Abbas said.

Both hits were near the Afghan border, said local political official Nasim Dawar. The Pakistani military sources asked not to be named because they are not authorized to release such information.

The first strike, which killed 10 people, occurred about 5:15 p.m. (7:15 a.m. ET) in a village near Mir Ali in North Waziristan, the officials said. Seven people died in the second hit at 7:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m. ET) near Wana, the major town in South Waziristan, 17 miles (27 km) from Afghanistan, they said.

There was no immediate response from U.S. officials.

Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, interviewed on CNN's ''The Situation Room,'' repeated that public opinion in his country is strongly against the strikes on Pakistan territory.

Musharraf was asked whether he is comfortable with the fact that the attacks are continuing, even with a new U.S. president in place.

''As far as this issue of the new president, President Obama, having taken over and this continuing ... I've always been saying that policies don't change with personalities.

''Policies have national interests and policies depend on an environment.''

The former leader added that he believes the environment and national interests of the United States'' are the same.

North Waziristan and South Waziristan are among seven districts in Pakistan's ungoverned tribal region, where the Taliban and other militants have sought haven.

The region has seen a sharp spike in the number of aerial attacks carried out by unmanned drones on suspected Taliban targets. The United States has the only military with drones operating in the area.

In 2008, there were 30 suspected U.S. missile strikes in Pakistan, based on a count by CNN in Islamabad.

The first U.S. strike on the tribal areas in 2009 came on New Year's Day. Two top al Qaeda terrorists were killed by a U.S. missile strike against a building in northern Pakistan, according to two senior U.S. officials.

The men, both Kenyans, were on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist list, one of the officials said, and were believed to have been responsible for the September suicide bombing at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.

India welcomes US remarks declaring Pakistan epicentre of terrorism

Continuing its diplomatic offensive against Pakistan, India Friday welcomed the US remarks saying Pakistan in the "epicentre of terrorism" and called upon the world to take action against terror from Pakistani soil.

Defence minister A.K. Antony Friday expressed his satisfaction with the US realisation that global terrorism emanates from Pakistan.

"More than 30 terror outfits are active in Pakistan. It is good that the world has realised that Pakistan is the epicentre of terrorism," Antony told reporters here.

"Now the world must take action against the terror from Pakistani soil," he said.

US President Barack Obama Thursday said Islamist extremists in Pakistan and Afghanistan posed a grave threat that his new administration would tackle as a single problem under a wider strategy.

The defence minister reiterated that the Indian armed forces are in a state of "preparedness".

India seeks world help to push Pakistan to act against terrorists

    * Antony says no US pressure on avoiding military action following Mumbai attacks

NEW DELHI: India on Friday asked the international community to cooperate in its efforts to make Pakistan act against terror outfits operating from its soil.

“Apart from solidarity or sympathy, what India needs is results and we are waiting for the results,” Defence Minister AK Antony told reporters.

He said terrorists operating across the borders were not only a threat to India but also to the entire world, adding the terror outfits and the infrastructure in Pakistan needed to be dismantled.

“I am happy that there is realisation in many quarters on terrorists operating from across the border. As per our information, at the moment there are 30 terror outfits operating from across the border,” Antony said.

Pressure: He also rejected the idea there was any pressure on India from the United States against using military action in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks. “No sensible person, no responsible country will say after the Mumbai attacks that India must not take any steps against terrorists,” Antony said.

About the armed forces’ state of preparedness after the terror attacks, Antony said, “They are doing their duty to the nation and they must, according to me, be ready to face any eventuality on the border.”

To a question on Pakistan seeking China’s help to ward off New Delhi’s pressure, the defence minister answered that there was nothing new in the move.

But he's "black" and a Democrat, so it's alright when he does those things. Only if it was a white Republican would it be wrong. After all, it's all about hope and change. You should stop being so critical of Obama and just start repeating slogans and act like everything is good again.

    Yes we can!!

We're sitting in the same desk, in the same classroom, where Russia learned it's lesson.

    You can't win in Afghanistan.

But Obama has to learn this the hard way. At our expense.

No no no. IRAN is the prize.

Zionism gets all horny just thinking about turning it into another Iraq.

    At our expense, of course.

however given it is not on the scale of firing missiles into pakistan im gonna let that one pass.given the uproar it has caused we shall see if he lives up to his promise on that from here on out..

    i personally have my doubts..

exactly what would jesus think about killing the palestinians?

well we know what jehovah would think about the palestinians, he would recommend killing them all, the old testament is full of references that encourage killing non jewish people simply because they worshipped a different god.

would jesus advocate killing people because of their beliefs?

probably not but then again he didn't live long enough to say much more the romans crucified jesus on the timely advice of the jewish priesthood. the romans didn't actually have any beef with jesus, they simply killed him on the good advice of the religious right wing who they eventually went to war with.

if the americans actually believed in jesus they would certainly not be bombing people and supporting corrupt regimes hell bent on causing misery.

christianity just became like every other religion - a tool for teaching hatred.

as i have said before the only way of this mess is to stop causing misery and stop funding people who hate mankind.

america got itself into this mess when they started training training religious bigots how to kill, all this teaching came round full circle when aircraft came crashing into buildings in new york.

another problem was america bombing its way around the world instead of negotiating and giving advice and support. creating conflict does no good, war breeds war. opening up a war is like opening pandoras box, you never know exactly what is coming out the box.

i wish america all the luck in the world but given the people obama has installed into government it really is business as usual.

pour all the troops in the world into the wastelands of afghanistan, the russians are probably laughing their heads off.

This is all a mistake Obama is a Liberal Democrat that has told us “Change is coming” and I believe him..

When I gave him my vote I knew he would follow through and turn this country around to “Green” “finically sound” “freedom” “windmills” “puppy dogs” and “butterflies”.

Pakistan has been on the list for a while they are a very ugly problem.. Nuclear weapons and the ISI very scary indeed.

The U.N. or U.S. can either take them over or Islam will..
Pakistan is on its way out.

Obama has a busy war schedule ahead of him maybe even Mexico..?
You know how Black people hate Mexicans anyway.

EL PASO - Mexico is one of two countries that "bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse," according to a report by the U.S. Joint Forces Command on worldwide security threats.
The command's "Joint Operating Environment (JOE 2008)" report, which contains projections of global threats and potential next wars, puts Pakistan on the same level as Mexico. "In terms of worse-case scenarios for the Joint Force and indeed the world, two large and important states bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse: Pakistan and Mexico.

How many black people do you know with names like the Peace President.?

Maybe more like the Enforcer, Cool Top or Slide Hand it is hard to say, he has kill a few hundred thousand people before he can earn a presidential war name.

"Change" means alot of different things.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire comes to mind.

I'll give Obama a chance to buck his handlers.

Otherwise, it's going to be up to the rest of us to save the country. Which is the route a true democracy would take anyway. Not this sorry excuse for one that we parade around.

Maybe you two forgot this quote then:
Obama said during his campaign he would strike terrorists in Pakistan. In fact, I think Rat went into one of his hysterical outbursts about it, claiming he was going to start a war with Pakistan, probably based on an infowars article.

You keep sneering at everyone and telling us about all those dumb brainwashed Obama supporters who were expecting change, when if you knew what you were talking about you'd realise he is doing EXACTLY what he said he would do in this case. Its alright because he's black? WTF.

Why don't you guys try some change and stop being bullshit talking fakes.

    captain obvious strikes again..

do you actually think this thread is addressed to anyone other than those who have sang the praises of him ending the wars and bringing the troops home since he was elected ??if youd look around there have been a few of them here over the last few days.

if you go back through my posts youd see i have used that quote probably a dozen times through his campaign as well as the quotes of biden alluding to the same thing..

me uninformed?? lol i dont think so...

You can't accuse him of not delivering change when he specifically said this was a policy he would keep.

    But keep trying.
