Hi there and good evening! So glad I have found this forum... so much information.. so many things.. It's.. Perfect.. I'm changing the way I live, what I do.. how I think.. It's not forced.. more like... I'll have a realisation and that will be me. So my dreads were 'born' as such on saturday past. So they are nearly a week old.. They were done by a friend using a dreadhead hq kit... and he LOVES WAX.. .. Uber waxed my head up! He did a good job though.. some i re did my self and they are super tight!!! My fiancée and I have managed to scrape a lot of wax out. There is one dread at the back which i took apart to re do and it stuck itself together ! So much wax... I shall try and get it out this weekend. Oh I gave them their first wash last night! I work in conservation and have been cutting down wind blown trees all week. ( Chainsaw fumes ate so good! Since I work in a t shirt my arms however smelt of spruce sap YUM! Anyways.. After reading here I've realised I have been doing so many things wrong.. Waxing my tips, palmrolling AGGRESSIVELY etc etc. QUESTION TIME! I currently have rubber bands at the tips and the roots. I shall be leaving the bands in at the tips for now while I tidy them up.. (Yes I will be tip rubbing them.. Considering threading them back into themselves) I am however wanting to remove the rubber bands from the roots. My hair is already eating them up and I don't want that... They are frizzy to the max right now... and will be for a looong time.. but thats what it is about.. So I'm to remove the bands... What next after this? Is string ok? Because of work I have to look relatively respectable when I am in the office but that is a rarity.. I often have to wear a helmet due to the forestry work I do so the beads would not be allowed to get in the way.. The fiancee's parents, any one else etc etc well tbh they can deal with it. Before last sat my hair was one large curly fro. And now it's a frizzy matt of little dreads sticking up every where.. Sorry if this post is rambling. Peace x
hokaaaaaaay. remove the rubber bands, at both the root and the tip. i had them at the tips of my old dreads and they really didnt help - the hair underneath wasnt dreaded, and they looked stupid anyway. i also wouldnt bother with threading the tips back into themselves - personally i prefer the loose hair at the ends (not loads, some). if you thread them back into themselves so early on, itll probs just come undone. to get the bands off the roots id just snip them and unravel them,, its prolly easier once the bands are off,.. leave them off. from my experience its only ever hindered the dreading process. dreads dont need to be held together to form the frizzy... its all good. get some aloe to smooth them.. get other peoples opinions on this cause i never used it i understand needing to look presentable etc, but baby dreads arent presentable.. sticking around everywhere, frizzy and all sorts. are they long enough to be held back with a headband,, bandana or summat? and read the threads about wax removal =]
you must do everything you can to get the wax out, unless you get it all out, your dreads will be doomed for failure. it sounds like your hair would have dreaded up naturally just fine...oh well
Cheers for the swift replies. Come to think of it the pineapple look isn't all that presentable Most of the dreads are 4-5 inches.. some at the back are dinky stubby things! I shall remove the bands tonight. Most of the time I wear a Buff.. (essentially a polyester tube?) I love these things but hoping to get more natural ones soon. I believe my hair would of dreaded naturally... Well it did in the past when i had my hair sectioned. For a week or two I had my hair sectioned like dreads but had three rubber bands on each. When i did this in the past for about a month they were dreaded at the base. Cheers again =] x
u probly wwont wanna hear this, but its probly for the best to undo all the mess thats been done and start over i saw how waxzy they look and theyre in the tip 10 waxiezst ive seen here just doing the wax removal may bnot do enough your probly best to comb it out dewax get the hair clean as vcan be then well then id definitely at least gop natural 4-6 weeeks to give it a chance tio recover then u can decide to backcomb or not..but if u do only backcomb nmothing else and only do it once you live so close to the beach that a daily dip in the ocean and going natural sdhould give u great locks quick tho
no wax, no rubber bands, no palm rolling, backcombing. salvaging your waxy head could be a problem, the good news is that they are still young and it shouldnt be hard to get it all out and start over. there are people here who thought they had got rid of the wax in their hair, but months later they are still finding it. the problem it causes can last for months, trying to correct it is frustrating and time consuming. if you are really attached to the job on your head go crazy with removing the wax. just be careful not to weaken your hair.
I think I'll do my best to de wax this wekeend and over the next month I'll see what happens with what is on my head.. They should all be pretty easy to undo.. they are very loose at the mo. The ones my Partner did certainly are quite loose so shouldn't be a problem. I'd be quite happy to re do my head and knowin it was myself that did it.. It's rather reassuring. I am currently de banding right now... My head feels so much better allready.. lighter, free'er... Looks a mess but i dont care... Thats what hats are for. Cheers again
dont cut them off that would be a waste then youd have to grow your hair 6 months or more to get enough to start over.simplycomb them out then strip away all the wax.it will be much easier to dewax with the hair loose once the wax is gone they'll dread fine if left alone or u can rebackcomb after as sufficeint time for the hasir to repair itself
Cut My hair!! Never!!! If needs be I can just brush it out... I hate getting my hair cut.. I did it last year for a girl... silly silly... think it was cut to about 2 1/2 inches :S
I shall get pics up the morn. Thats all the bands out the hair now... can feel the was out back :S bleh!! roll on their first wash de waxing wash the morn!!
right here is what i did to get excess wax out of my hair, boil water...take it off the stove...take the pot outside...dip each dread in the boiling hot water until the wax liquidates and floats to the top, change out the water and repeat.
be very very very careful with that its dangerouse but will work u can also use the methoss in the wax sticky but it may not be enough try both carefully btw it doesnhjt have to be boiling boiling is what 240 f? something like that wax melts at 140 so as long as the waterers up around 150 it woill work but still its hot enough to scold but at least its not over 200..certainly not safe but at least its not as dangerouse use a meat thermometer or something, just get the water above 150 then do it ofcourse it wont stay above 150 long so regheat when u change the water
I wouldn't worry too much, lots of people have started with wax and rubberbands, and lots also turned out great. It's up to you if you listen to the ones above or not haha But I would just recomment to wash once in two days, the wax will get out if you wash regularly. About the rubber bands, it depends on what kind you used, the thick ones, you should let in for a very long time, when the sun shines on your head they can melt. But here in the Netherlands (I don't know if they're sold somewhere else in the world) there are perfect bands for sale, which never melt and can hold for 6 years (though you shouldn''t let them in that long hahah). But seems like you want to remove them so that's not an issue anymore. But by putting bands in you keep the hair from moving and it will cause loops on the roots, which normally wouldn't form. Good luck! I just checked your album, your hair is short, so the wax will probably come out easily. Why didn't you go natural your hair's perfect for natural dreads haha
my wax came out after multiple hot showers and lots of time under the shower head. Bands get nasty and trapped in the hair, and when they grow out, you can really tell where they are.
Hi there. Thank you again for all the replies. I am now rubber band free and it feels fantastic! How I put up with that tight feeling I don't know.. The tips were fairly waxed up (and still are) but I worked them loose while at work today. Hoping it helps with the wax removal process.. I am glad I found this forum before I was further on! what is a week, two or even 6 in this process that play such a large roll in my life... Folk have asked me 'how long will you have them' I said a year at least... they were shocked.... for them that is a long time... for me I recon they will still be little foetus's. Got myself orange oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil, bicarbonate of soda and ACV.. My housr is being invaded by friends the night so may not get it started until tomorrow. One friend who I haven't seen for years has/had natural dreads and she is coming over the night.. I'm so excited. She has three left (cut most of her hair off at christmas!) Anyways I'll keep you all posted Peace
oooh, maybe she'll cut one off and give it to you ^-^ I'm going over to england tomorrow to see my bestfriend who did my dreads this is her second set, she's gonna give me one of her old ones that she cut off <3 I might even stick it into mine!
