So, I was a vegetarian for about 4 years before I went back to eating meat. That was two years ago. I'd really like to go vegan now, but I was wondering if anyone else has done that. I know veganism is my goal, but would it be easier to just cut out meat and other animal products a little at a time, or should I just go cold turkey (pardon the expression, LOL) and skip straight to veganism? Any advice?
A little at a time is what everyone seems to reccommend. I'm not going vegan, myself. I'm happy with lacto-ovo-veg.
Depends. How did you go veg? What worked at that stage will be the better starting point for a new stage. I have a vegan buddy who gives me endless crap about my "28 year transition to vegan." I told him until vegan yogurt was as good or better than cow yogurt, I'd still be transitioning. But, i went from Kosher omni to lacto-ovo veg in three months. (in Texas, with parents, two sets, bit against it)
Well, the first time I went veg I just up and quit eating meat. It was my New Years Resolution when I was sixteen. But at that point, I was living in my parents house eating their food, so instead of getting good, healthy food, I was getting a lot of side dishes. Occasionally I'd get some vegetables, but not anywhere near what I should have been getting. Now that I live on my own, it will be easier to get healthful food that will make up a complete diet, so I'm hoping it will be easier to just do it. I'm afraid if I try to make a slower transition, I'll never get completely around to being vegan.
It seems to differ from person to person. When I met my husband he was a meateater, and he went vegan "cold turkey(!)" and was totally fine I had however been veg for years before that, I knew te goal was veganism but as I was young, still with family, then abroad etc I knew itd be too difficult both healthwise and practicially to go straight to vegan. A gentle transition was the way for me. I was pescatarian for a year or so, then veg, then I cut out eggs, and finally honey and began label reading. Ive now been vegan for 3 years and never felt better So its entirely up to you and what you think will work. I think transition is the general recommendation with a higher success rate of sticking to it as its not such a shock and cravings and addictions wont pop up as much, but as I said my husband did it straight away with no trouble Good luck
Don't forget that learning curve! I remember the day I bothered to read the ingredients on Gummi Bears, and a yogurt I liked. Gelatin. I was surprised and headed to the library to see why it was used. (this would have been, 81-82) So try being all vegan at home and give yourself a break when out (set a time frame, though) to start, or certain days, adding more fairly quickly. But for sure, have a lot of info at hand!
