If you like more traditional sorts of music (as opposed to the more singer-songwriter side of folk), I highly recommend Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. It may cost a lot but you can probably (read: definitely) find it on a torrent tracker.

For some free folk music, check out Roger McGuinn's Folk Den, which is him playing a folk song every month: http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/folkden-wp/.

On YouTube, search "peglegsam" and watch some of the episodes of Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest. This was a cable access TV show he had in the 60's where he played songs and invited famous folk singers to come on and play with him, it was really great.

Recommended bands / singers to check out: Lead Belly, New Lost City Ramblers, Woody Guthrie, Dock Boggs, the Almanac Singers, Memphis Jug Band, Jean Ritchie, the list goes on

Aaa...Nick Drake...Cocain all around my brain, cocain all around my brain. Lalalala :)

    Comus is great band.
Although now I´m still listening to young psych folk singer and guitarist Alela Diane from California. Such a soft and beautiful music.
Check album The Pirate´s Gospel (2006).

Don't forget Peter Paul and Mary. Then there's Dylan's early albums. Richard and Mimi Farina, Phil Ochs, Incredible String Band
