I participate in an event called "original oratory" i need to write a speech. i just don't know what to write it on. my past topics have been: Animal Rights (I was a freshman and didn't know any better) The Suburban Complex (best piece I have ever written) Some weird analogy speech about not living to plan things. Numbers I'm thinking: America's Drug War The concept of donating money through things like the red campaign/ researching charities. I wish i could think of something better, like my suburban complex one. but sadly I am no longer creative. So I turn to you guys (in all seriousness). If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them.
Its a very dangerous topic, but one that is not addressed enough in a holistic, all encompassing fashion: The idea that westerners can afford to live such lavish and materialistic lives because there is an enormous pool of cheap labour to abuse throughout the third world, and most importantly why few people care. I know that us buying our products is assisting them to develop in a way, but I also recognize that our greed does not often allow them to develop fairly. Interest you at all bun bun?
This is a great speech idea, however, it is a commonly given one. Things like this, animal rights, anything about africa, etc... is heard a lot, and they do not do well in competition. I do not feel like I could add anything new to the idea, and it would be a boring speech to listen to. Which is a shame, because it's a lovely idea, and needs to be talked about.
actaully that could totally fit into an idea i had about compromise. i was thinking of drawing an analogy from atoms, and how they have to combine in order to be happy. The ones with too many give to the ones with not enough electrons in order to work. I was thinking about talking about something like this in our daily lives, and how people always say "it's impossible to please everybody" when I truly don't think it is, i think everyone just needs to have this willingness to compromise, and everyone could come out with something. I could use your bit and put it into a broad scale example.
I don't really know if it is as common as you say, unless you are talking about the people that spin off a load of facts without making any interesting observations. I was thinking along the lines of looking at an American home and figuring exactly where their goods come from and how much of it is produced by cheap, unfair labour...then making a lot of wry, witty and uncomfortable observations about how selfish people are without them even knowing or thinking about it. It would really hit people hard and mess with the very fabric of their realities. Everybody talks about evil corporations, but not evil consumers. Still I know what you mean and the above would be really difficult to do without a lot of hard, thorough research.
Yes. I like this. It isn't so much the fact that evil corporations abuse sweatshop labour that I care about, its more so that people are too focused on having everything for themselves to actually give some thought to the fact that other people exist on the Earth.
also, the people at my job shadow were weird. and started asking me about belle and sebastian, and thanks to your hipster moves, i was able to not be completely out of the loop.
I have been meaning to ask you about this. So the job shadow thing has been good? Now you just need to listen to God Speed You Black Emperor and the Shins and you will be able to dazzle every beret wearing alternative person in America.
I already listen to the shins homez. and i even own a beret. it was a very good experience. the girl really liked me, and gave me all these books and was telling me about all these anarchist housing options in this city. she went to a universiy that i've applied to, and she was just super rad.
I like your drug war idea. Talk about how it doesn't solve any problems, and actually creates new ones.
