Would you buy something on ebay from a seller who didn't want to use paypal?

i have to use ones that don't require a paypal account since i don't have paypal because i won't get a bank account at all. it helps keep me outta the governments eye sight, and when i have to get my lisence renewed i give then an address that i know i'm getting ready to move away from. i try to stay one step ahead but that doesn't always work out either.

i sent a money order for 2 fraggle rock dolls for my son, and the seller had 100% positive feedback. didnt get the fraggle dolls, wouldnt answer any of my emails asking if they received it. then after a month, i reported them, and they immediately responded to that.... yeah. however, someone cleaned up a bit and threw away my money order stub. so i gave up, they didnt give me any negative feedbacks, and neither did i (only so they wouldnt, i have one).

i wouldnt do it. from personal experience.

I'm having second thoughts about this. I don't think he is going to take the money and run, but it is a possibility. The account hasn't been used since Oct 31 last year, and all his other feedback is from sellers. This is only the second thing he has sold, the first was a set of climbing gear that hasn't been used much that were sold last week. Now, he says the tent has only been erected for pitching practise in his back garden, and has been in storage for 3 years. What the fuck is "pitching practise" and what tent has he been using while going on climbing trips? He has taken the tent pegs for use with his other tent, which is fair enough, but why has he done this, could it be because tent pegs tend to wear more and might give away the fact that he is lying about the fact the tent hasn't been used at all?

So I don't think the account has been hijacked, but I suspect he might not be being totally up front about the condition of the item. So I fork out 160 for a tent that smells and has a small rip with no paypal insurance, and for someone who seems to mostly use ebay for buying, what does it matter to him if he gets 1 bad rep?

I'd say that 99 percent of trades asking strangers for money upfront are scammers.
I know a guy who loss half a million pounds on it.Never got it back.

There's just no reason in the world why he cant set up an escrow of some sort thro a friend/family.
People lose money with big , legit cos , so why risk your cash with whats just an email address?

I got two days to think about it. I've emailed him and asked him what pitching practise is, see what he says.

Ask him why he's got no friends or family.
ie why cant they set up paypal for him?
( I'm only half joking .But I'd never pay in a million years. And doing business with strangers was my living)

Well you know I was asking him stuff, and he earned some trust from me, enough for me to have a leap of faith. Then I asked him for more details on what happened with paypal to put him off, and he started getting all shitty with me. So I said, if you are not going to be prepared to at least answer my questions then I retract my bid, and he replied saying that he is fed up with all the questions and if I don't pay for the item, provided I win, he is going to leave me bad rep.

    What a fucking toss pot.

    GOOD NEWS!
Sellers CAN NOT leave negative feedback anymore. Its either positive or none. Now thier comments can be bad. I think its dumb because buyers can play games with sellers but in your case it will help ya out!

Thanks for that, I forgot about that rule.

Shame is the guy is probably legit, he is just being a fanny.

This a quote from the feedback he left someone:

"sent payment it was returnd -you sent wrong address didnt get back to me ....mug "

    They replied with this comment.

"man what the? I get a neg and you never even paid! Partner that's crazy talk!!!"

    Says it all really...

There was this seller johnnyland, man to he ever win the cake of a freak. He would call you, threaten children who answered the phone, calls the cops on you, and ect if you left him negative feedback when you paid for the item and he could not even prove he sent your item off, or if you recieved it ect. but you could prove he got his money.

This guys is being an asshat now. First he said that he is sick of me asking questions and that if I don't pay then he will bad rep me, I replied and said that I would stick to my side of the deal, but if he left any negative comments I would bad rep him back, even if the tent was as good as he said it was. Now he is saying that if I win he will with draw the sale because he wants the tent to go to someone who will appreciate it.

    Fucking ebay!

My first rule of business is , if you think someone's an arsehole , the chances are that they are.

There's absolutely no reason in the world to send some moron money like that without full safeguards. Its obvious the guy is a loser who's trying pressure tactics because he lives in wacko-world.

Can he leave me bad rep and then withdraw the sale? I know he can't leave neg rep, but has can place negative comments.

He says that I am covered by ebay if he sells me a pup and I don't pay via paypal, but I don't think that is right.

Here is a transcript of the converstion, from the point at which things started getting silly. Which one of us is being the asshat?

    ME:

I think you sound like you are being geniune and honest about this, so I'll take a leap of faith.

From the photos you took though, it does look like the material has been stretched a little through use.

May I ask what happened with paypal to put you off them?

    Regards,

    HIM:

******* if you dont want to buy the tent..dont put in another bid as i am sure the bids will rise over the next day or so....the tent is new and ...the outer shell is not stretched as it has never been used...i am not going to repeat myself over and over....i do not accept paypal end of...sorry

    ME:

If you don't want to answer my questions then I retract my existing bid.

Paypal is there to ensure buyers don't get ripped off.

    It happens.

    HIM:

i have answered at least 10 of your questions, i have been truthful in what i have said, if there are no more bids on this tent and you dont pay then i will leave a negative response against your name...simple as...you have entered into a legally binding contract.......i am not trying to rip anyone off pal...

    ME:

I was going with you on the deal!.... until you started getting all
    shirty with me.

Do you expect me to fork out 150 euro to a complete stranger
on the internet without making sure everything is above board?

I asked why you didn't want to use paypal, and you said you had
a bad experience. What is wrong with asking you about the
    details of that?

I am relatively new to this and I have asked some advice from
friends as to whether I should buy something without using
paypal, and there have been a mixture of responses.

Me asking you questions is my way of gaining confidence in you.

But the fact that you have dodged the question about paypal
now seems a little suspect. That and the attitude you have taken
with me now has caused me to lose all trust I had previously
    held for you.

    HIM:

£150 pounds sterling ...why would i accept euros.....i dont accept paypal because of a fraudulent occurance on my account a few years back...the fraudsters gained all my details from paypal and made transactions on it...so you are not so safe with paypal after all...ebay is all about trust...and if you read the ebay rules..i cannot sell you any goods that are wrongly listed, ie, the tent is new....it has to be new otherwise you have the right to a refund or complain to ebay and i get banned or suspended....if you make the payment by creditcard in your bank to my account...you are also covered by your creditcard insurance....i have answered multiple questions that you have sent me and yes i have got pissed off with some of them especially the one asking me about pitching...then about the creases...then about the outer cover being stretched...(if you dont stretch an outer cover..you get wet son)...then about teaching scouts.....get my drift!!!!

    ME:

I've been in Holland for the past three years so I'm used to
everything being in Euro, I meant pounds.

Sorry to hear you are pissed off at all the questions, but if you
can't be bothered taking the time to reassure me that all is
good, especially since you have only sold one other item, then
you are not being a very good trader.

I wasn't accusing you off trying to rip me off at all, I just wanted
to be sure. The last winner of the auction didn't seem to trust
you enough to buy the item...

If I had been spoken to by a shop keeper in the way you have
spoken to me here I would turn and walk out the door.

The inner fly sheet looks like it has been stretched through use,
in a similar way that tents I have previously owned have, and the
outer sheet looks like it has been packed very badly. Now I can't
tell from the photos what state it is in, it looks new, but I don't
know. How else can I get a complete picture of what I am buying
unless I flipping well ask you!!

    HIM:

lets hope the next time you try to buy something off ebay...you think about what questions you have and put them in one email.......lets hope its the last email i get off you!!!!!!!...fyi the last buyer wanted to pay by paypal...he was from denmark ....end of goodbye

    ME:

Well I hope someone outbids me, but if I happen to win the bid, I
will stick to my side of the bargain, but only because I really
    want that tent.

If the item is as you describe, then I will give you + feedback,
but if there are any negative comments in my feedback from you
then you will get a neg. FYI you cannot give me bad rep anyway,
but if there as any negative comments...

I find your tone in all of this offensive and very condescending,
and it will be the last time I ever deal with you on ebay, I assure
    you.

    HIM:

i hope that you are outbid...because you dont deserve the tent...the only reason i am selling it is because i wanted someone to enjoy the tent rather than it just sitting in my garage....it is not about the money...infact if you do win ..i will withdraw the item from sale

    ME:

So you don't want to sell it to me now?

    (no response)

If you withdraw the sale then you are the one wasting my time!

If you had simply answered the question about paypal, instead
of going off on one, then we wouldn't have had this argument. I
was willing to accept your replies, and simply wanted to ask one
more question, if you can't be bothered then it's your loss, not
mine. I can find another tent like this from someone who IS
prepared to communicate with me without being insulting.

You accuse me of being a nuisance, and then when I offer you
the chance to retract the deal you then threaten me with bad
rep. I then offer to stick to my side of the deal, and now you are
threatening to pull out. This is crazy talk partner!

I wont bother hanging around tomorrow to organise payment
then, and if you bad rep me because of this then I will report you
    to ebay.

    HIM:

    "."

    ME:

    How very mature..

    HIM:

    STOP EMAILLING ME YOU PEST

It says in the advert payment should be made via postal order, cheque or cash on collection.

It's interesting how the previous winner didn't want to buy the item, and how no-one else has put in a bid this time round for an item that normally sells like hot cakes on ebays.

His name suggests he is a football supporter and a fan of happy hardcore, both or which are generally followed by uneducated morons, the type of people who will rise up to you in a pub for simply talking to them.
