trying to be black? come on. the only way you should look black is if you somehow darkened your skin and got plastic surgery.

this silly labeling just hurts our confidence in ourselves.

thats why i said trying. i live in a small town thats mostley white and its all gossip. everything. anyway. our feelings? i wasnt directing it at anyone with dreads.

what do you need to do to actually start dreads?? just section it off then back comb??? (thats what i would do, natural would take way to long, and i want mine to be neat.)

No, I summerized what you basically said so you can understand how it comes off to me. It's silly, clothes are clothes and labels are soooo high school. And bringing race into it is a whole 'nother issue.

Well, I KIND OF AM IN HIGHSCHOOL.
And really bringing race into it is just what people will do. I never said anything about it except that, That is what people will say about them. Im not racist.

and I didnt say i dont want to be associated with black people i said that ghetto clothes dont suit me. ???

again, is all you have to do is back comb? wouldnt they just come undone? how long does it take for them to stay together, when you touch them and/or shower. Woudnt taking a shower a few days after combing just make them come out, rendering all the back combed pre dreads useless?

Backcombed dreads will come apart a little bit after the first wash. And wash your hair as soon as it feels gross.

And yes, high school is hell but you can overcome the pressure. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I'm never said you were racist, I was just making a point on race-related conformity and peer pressure.

how long does it take for them to start being like solid, and not falling apart? do you mean wash like rinse or like rub them all around?
can you swim in a pool with them or is chlorine bad for them?
and meh. i have exams all the rest of the week. i probably should have studied. :banghead: o well i dont think they matter for me anyway.

dreads are not and should not be dirty, tell your mom this. if you dont keep you dreads clean by washing about once sometimes twice a week they will grow nasty ass shit in them. sometimes mold accumulates in your dreads. cleanish dreads are happy dreads!

good point. ill probably have to slow down washing my hair then. which has some good effects. less shampoo (id get a bar anyway) and faster showers.... Is it ok to get them wet though, like shower but dont use any shampoo in my hair? if i do that every other day or something. I still havent really told her again, i tried to when she said i need to get my hair cut but it didnt feel like a good time.

random question, are dreads warm? Like do they keep you warm in the winter, or worse, do they make you sweat alot in the summer? (i do anyway)

Yes they trap alot of heat, my ears or neck never get cold :)
I think its great about you wanting dreads, but peer pressure or race shouldn't even come into your mind when your contemplating starting them.

IMO, they just break the wind. I have dreads almost down to my shoulders, pretty thick hair, and my head still gets cold. But it's definitely better than "regular" hair. I still feel I have to wear a hat when it's cold outside and after washing I tend to get colder because they take a long while to dry. Maybe this will change as they get longer but currently my dreads keeping me warm would be the last thing I would say about them. Now in the summer time, they sure as don't keep cool that's for sure. It's really just like the hair you have now except with tons of locked, tangled hair.

locks will be thicker than any hair of the same length, thus that much warmer. whether it makes a difference or not depends on where you live. i live in canada and its -36 celcius today, so locks wont replace a ski mask here.
you should do either natural or backcomb. either way should be easy to manage with your hair, just keep sections/make sections at a certain size. use a residue free shampoo/soap when you feel dirty then youre on your way to locks.

    hmmp.... bump/update...

well. bad news. well my mom saw a paper i wrote i want dreads on, then she was like hah yeah right, then later at dinner someone brought it up and my moms like your never getting dreads. and my dad was like your not getting dreads, and im like why not? and he wouldnt say anything hes just like because. then i was like what ever ill get them when i go to college you cant do anything about it. and my dads like you wont want them then. and i was like yes I will. then hes like no you wont, i said why not. and he paused for a bit then hes like "because they will be/ are out of style. and i was like. i dont care ill still get them. (he doesnt give a shit about style, neither do i) i know he just said it because he couldnt say "Your not a ******" because my brothers half black friend was eating dinner with us. because im pretty sure he said something like that the last time i mentioned getting dreads like a year ago.

ah... i brought it up to my mom again a bit ago and she dropped the "your not a ******" line, and said that they were dirty. i tried telling her about it but no shes to ignorant. i said theyre clean, and thats like saying black people cant shave their head cause skin heads do. (idfk) and then she said im never getting them then i said i will when im 18, and by her not letting me do what the fuck i want, its just gonna be like 10 times worse once i turn 18. Oh well shell see. 2 more years for me!!! (more like 1 and 4 months though!!!!)

Gah! I'm not a teenager and *I* want to rebel against your parents...

Random Good Thing To Know: Anyone cutting your hair without consent can be charged with some sort of assault. (Though against parents that's probably not a good idea :D )
