So I live right near Geneva, Switzerland, which is home to the annual World Economic Forum summit that takes place in the Davos ski resort every January.
For those who don't know, the World Economic Forum is a non-profit foundation that seeks to "bring together top business leaders, international political leaders, selected intellectuals and journalists to discuss the most pressing issues facing the world including health and the environment." (from Wikipedia)

In a couple weeks the 2009 summit will be taking place. From what I gather, there will be several demonstrations around Switzerland, including Geneva. I was thinking about attending, but I'm not entirely sure it's the right thing to do considering the foundation has addressed some alternative issues that often go neglected by governments and corporations (or so the WEF claims). They're also unique in that they encourage public participation through sites like Youtube and Facebook, unlike other institutions such as the WTO or IMF.

I believe that the neoliberal globalisation that is unfolding at the moment is definitly the wrong kind of globalisation. It seems that the current policies of western governments and transnational companies is to make way for an absolutely free market without regards for the environment, worker's rights, or non western cultures.
After doing a bit of research, however, I am still split on whether the World Economic Forum is something to be supported or opposed. On one hand, the WEF does seem like a useful platform to participate in and share ideas with. On the other hand, it does kind of seem like an attempt by the people who organize it to create a "friendly face" for corporate globalization and legitimize the actions of the west and TNCs.

    Does anyone have any thoughts?
