Merry Christmas! You must have been very good this year. Looks like a great monitor.

I just went out and got a new 22" monitor on the boxing day sales. Now as soon as I figure out how to get Ubuntu to display 1680x1050 I'll be set. It looks great in windows with the right resolution but kind of fuzzy using the highest res that my Ubuntu OS offers.

There are several ways to do this. GUI methods, command line methods, hacked workarounds, and editing configs. Do you use Gnome?

I find it easiest just to edit the xorg config file. If you want, send me your current xorg.conf file and I'll replace the resolution section for you and send you the new file.

First back up the original, working xorg.conf file.
Now copy the file to your desktop as a text file. This will allow you to open the file and copy-paste it in a quote here. Just send it via PM and I can help.
Now look on your desktop for "xorg.txt" and open the file. Highlight all the text and right click it > copy. Then send me a PM just right click the text box on Hipforums and click Paste.

I tried both those commands in terminal and get "missing destination file operand after..." on each one. I am very inexperienced at using anything but windows so I'm probably missing something most linux people would know. I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 and it's not supported anymore and I'm also having problems trying to update it. I keep getting errors about repositories when I try and update it. I might just uninstall and then install 8.10.

Those errors are result of a typo in the command. If you still want, try highlighting the text > copy > paste it into the terminal. If the command is not exactly what I put, it will not work correctly. Be careful with it tho.

Installing 8.10 sounds like a good idea. The 6.10 repositories may not be available anymore (not sure). Mostly to make room for the newer Ubuntu release repos. Another possibility is that your Internet connection failed or maybe a setting in a firewall or router is preventing connection to the server.
