lets say hypothetically, you destroyed your hand and couldn't use it anymore. it barely moves and is in constant pain. it has caused you a lot of grief over the past 6 months. you need an indefinite amount of surgeries on it that are keeping you from going to work and starting your life again. if you get it amputated, you'll get $20,000 from an insurance policy. also you're running out of money so that would be really helpful. and you wouldn't have to get anymore surgeries.

but, the small chance that you may regain any function in it in the future, especially with medical advancement a so forth, would be gone along with the hand.

the hand doesn't even look like a hand to you, it's grotesque and you no longer feel as though it is even a part of you. you have virtually no use of it. a prosthetic hand with like a little pincher on it would literally be more useful than what you have now with a hand.

    do you amputate it?

id amp it and get me a chainsaw hooked up like in the army of darkness. and if by chance tech gets better in the body parts section, get a new hand like luke skywalker. :D

It would really depend on the prognosis.
$20K would not cover the previous bills, or future prosthetics.

If there was hope of recovery of some function, I'd have to go that route.
