.. i have a few questions =] did you do it tight did you do it all in one sitting, or over a period of time (and which turned out best) did it all come apart when you washed for the first time how long did you wait before washing.. did you palmroll them or anything straight after backcombing to make them more sausage-shaped ..i think thats it for now =] iggy:
Oh my xD I'll attempt answering all of em xD Yea, I did it as tight as I could, right up against my scalp (fooking hurt) I did it over one sitting, took 12/13 hours in all Nah it didn't come apart, because for the forst few washes I used some old tights as advised (and washed it 2 or 3 weeks after backcombing- your other question ) but after the first few washes after that I didn't use the net, and they didn't come undone- however a few at the back came loose so I re-backcombed 'em. And I did palmroll them straight after backcombing, and used a bit of wax, EURGH, that's the only time I've used wax, never again :S Palm rolling makes them less fluffy, backcombing is pushing the hair upwards into a lump kinda thing, palm rolling sorta brings them out into a sausage shape and supposedly tightens them, so yea ^^
I backcombed, took 2 days on and off. It was really tight but after a few days just fely kinda spongey. I did not wash for about 2 months.Soooo hard as my head was itchy. When I did I just left them and they were all flat for ages. After about a year they were really tight and had gone round. They never came apart when I washed them but I always get whisy bits but my hair is super slippy and fine.
the last 2 times i (by i, i mean my friend) backcombed it took about 7 hours, loosely done, and i couldnt last much longer than just over a week without washing, the itchies were so so so bad, and they all came apart in the shower, and i used wax.. =/ im thinkin of gettin them back again in the next month or so, but i wanna do it 'properly', in the sense that they dont all fall out after 2 weeks
I backcombed mine over the course of 3 days with 6-8 hours each day. It took a while. She backcombed them tight but not overly tight as it took so much time as it is just to do what we did. And foolishly I used waxed three or 4 times before realizing it was bullshit and luckily it washed out as far as I could tell. I used it very sparingly so it wasn't that bad but I definitely see how it could be a nightmare for some. And before finding quality information I was under the impression you had to have rubber bands. So I wore these damn bands in for 5 months changing them often so it wouldn't be eaten by my dreads. The bands caused a lot of breakage really, as well as the backcombing. I generally advise against it. During this period of time that I had bands in my hair I would use the backcomb the ends regularly to push the knots up and get them tighter. This really didn't cause that much damage compared to the rubber bands, but now over a year in the process the ends where I backcombed over and over are the last to dread. On any given dread I have 1-3 inches of undreaded hair near the end. I like it and appreciate it but I have gotten comments like "when the end of your hair dread up." In fact it has been starting to lock for sometime, its just slow. I used a large crochet hook a few time with minimal success and noticed in the long run it actually loosen my dreads and created more frizzies. I of course thought palm rolling actually was useful during this time. After the first time I washed them they came completely out. For a long period of time washing my hair was bad because it just constantly undreaded my hair. Now that it's dreading naturally, it aids the process and enjoy washing it. I scrub the shit out of it. I think I waited 2 weeks before washing. But after finding quality information I stopped doing all the bad practices. I now only rip them apart. I love the loose hairs and embrace the natural process. In the beginning I thought they were hard work because I was trying to control the process. Now, I just let it happen and don't spend more then 5 minutes in any given week with my hair aside from washing it which takes a while.
i think the thing im most concerned//confused//worried about is the fact that im so used to putting wax on them to keep them together, and obv thats bad, and im just thinkin 'what holds it all together?!'
I never used wax and mine were fine, just do um real real tight and dont wash um for a while. The knots just shrink up and your hair eventually gets tighter over time.
I backcombed but just with my hands, well me and my friends hands no combs or anything ^-^ just rubbed and ripped. It didn't feel tight at all, there was at least 2/3 inches of undreaded hair from the root. we did it all it one sitting, it took maybe an hour? I waited about 3 weeks before washing and they didn't come out at all it just made em tighter. I just slept on them, no palmrolling...
Tight as my sister could do it. Did it over 2 days, mabey about 4 hours the first when it became apparent that it was going to be a long haul, and then 10 hours or so the next day. I think I left it a fortnight before I washed it, and it fell out within the first 2 months or so. Nice to see your back on the dread bandwagon anyway.
i might be stupid, but i dont understand that method.. ive read a post where you said about it before and i was like 'eh?!' did you rub upwards with yer fingers or summat, and then rip, and rub again?
it was tight it was done in one sitting it did not come apart i waited a day to wash i root rubbed, root looped, palm rolled, palm rubbed, rebackcombed and did every unnecessary shit method of maintenance under the sun. my results were probably not the norm though, they were waxed and i ended up cutting them.
did you do it tight fairly tight. did you do it all in one sitting, or over a period of time (and which turned out best) took me a week or two. did it all come apart when you washed for the first time oh yes. how long did you wait before washing.. almost a month i think. did you palmroll them or anything straight after backcombing to make them more sausage-shaped backcombed, then palmrolled, then did nuthin.
I don't know how to explain it realli, other than I did. Imagine just getting a section of hair and messing it up like you would, om christmas lights lol. Just tangle and rub them to encourage them to mush together. If you get a section of hair and split it in two, rejoin and split in two again, upwards it will form knots without being tight or having that awful backcombed look. No offense to anyone but a lot of backcombed dreads look awful. Thats just my opinion though
I backcombed my three inches of hair into super tight little nubs over the course of a month or so. The back of my head began to dread over the course of the month so I left the ones in the back to their own devices, now those are my favorite dreads. Everything stayed when I washed them within a week of initially backcombing with some anti oil facial scrub that worked really well. Now I pretty much never wash them unless I go swimming.
i backcombed a bit, pretty losely. i did the front first and then a week later i did all the rest. i put beads in to help them form. i palmroll and rip a bit every now and then.. they came out in back some when i showered so i backcombed a bit again. i never backcombed them very tight, so they look very natural and are actually wavy... i was every 2-3 days with dr bronner's or this other stuff called jason organic with tea tree oil. it smells so good
i think i getcha now =] i shall give it a go.. i know what you mean about the appearance of backcombed dreads, but i prefer it to the way 'natural' dreads look =]
I can definitely tell a difference between the part of the lock that was backcombed and the part that has grown and dreaded naturally. The natural ones look way better. This is my biggest problem with backcombing.
true, some natural dreads can look like crud!and I know I know people are prolly gonna come on here saying it's not about the look of them.haha. Dreads are like kids, you will love your own no matter what (I will anyway) but you can mouth off others easily lol. Hey,so I found this video on youtube which shows how to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VimvRHBJTqw tell me what you think and how they look, I wanna seeeeeeee!
