The dreads are looking great... your kids are so sweet by the way! I think if they want to go dready, it would look wonderful on them and maybe also teach them some things :)

Seven month update! I seem to have a LOT of loose strands now from all the ripping I've had to do to stop massive congos forming. I keep telling myself its a work in process and they'll all dread up nicely given a year or two!

Some peoples hair dreads with very few loose hairs, and some peoples dreads have tons of loose hairs even after 10 years. It's because they want it to look neater i dunno. I maintain my dreads but i dont crochet. I use a THIN needle, with a string used to pull the hairs in. I dont do it too often only when its really bad.

And PLEASE dont do the lighter thing. They'll stink like a burning pig. And the hair ends will look like crap, i accidentally burned one of mine but thankfully u cant notice it.

7 months seems to be the time for most people that they really start to look like dreads. Yours are progressing nicely. Im pushin 4.....thanks for the pics they're inspirational! Ive been feeling a little down lately with my hair!

    you are really beautiful!

i noticed a big difference btw crocheted and loose ends regarding how fast the dread locks. i have two rounded ends that i did for shits, and those dreads had these loose bits in the middle and took forever to lock.

im gonna agree with murdahorse (hi btw) and say that crocheting in loose hairs doesnt fucking wreck your dreads!!!
i know b/c ive done it to a few of mine and i crochet a friends dreads monthly. if you crochet (which soaring eagle has never done and has no experience with) its very easy to see that no fucking hair is ripping or breaking. use a small hook. it has a rounded tip, its made to part hairs in wool and it parts human hair too. i have a miniscule little one and i can easily get it through super hard two year old locks without breaking a hair.
im not trying to argue (well maybe a little) but it kinda pisses me off when people bash methods they have no experience with!!

that being said, if you decide to crochet, i would wait till you hair has locked up some more, b/c loose hairs dont stay in loose dreads very well. and keep in mind that you really dont have to crochet to have neater dreads (im of the opinion that messy dreads are the best anyway) you can wait and the loose hairs will eventually be sucked in, for the most part. though i dont think anyone ever truly gets rid of loose hairs, or more grow to take their place.
anyway, your dreads look really awesome the way they are.
