they usually are considered pre-punk, but that has more to do with context and time period than anything. I suppose the general consensus is that the Ramones were the first real punk group, since I can't imagine anyone in this day and age calling Television a punk group.

Hehe! the ramones WASNT the first real punk band the first band to be called PUNK was the NY DOLLS in 1968 and became the first punk band to record an album in 1971 the RAMONES was still in school at the time and only in 1974 they made they first album! and not only that the New York dolls was one of the first band to be called GLAM rock but you also got IGGY POP and the stooges in 67-68 DJ s calling them PROTO-PUNK! it just like the first HEAVY metal band WASNT Blck sabbath NOR motorhead! it was STEEPINGWOLF used the word in the song born to be wild and some Radio DJ called them a HEAVY METAL band!
