We did. We went to France/Spain etc. but had to pay more for the fast trains.. So it's more expensive than you think.

in France it's ok: 1,5 euro p/p, but in Spain train from Madrid to Cordoba 10 euros (!!) p/p. They also wanted to rip us of between Barcelona and Paris. For a fast one way ticket they wanted to charge like 60 euro's. But with one stop at the border it was only 1,50 euro. So always ask for alternatives. And I really suggest to get your tickets one or two days before you want to leave because we had lots of trouble getting tickets on the day we wanted to leave. We sometimes had to wait al the day (ofcourse we didn't wait, but visited the city we were) for a train.
Nighttrains are ok, if you are in a couchette but not in the highest bed. They say there is airconditioning but not at the highest bed (so very hot). Also problem: they often only have couchettes (which are pretty expensive). Sleeping in a chair is awfull, chairs are made for small people I guess (I didn't sleep all night so horrible).

rail passes are good because they save you money if you are traveling to more then one country but make sure you get the correct one that you need also look into airtravel because it might be a bit cheaper depending where you are going
