Hi...new here. I wasn't a folkie, but the music was a good respite from the usual AM radio fare. Mostly it was played at parties without dancing, we sat around smoking Benson & Hedges cigarettes, and feeling smart. Kingston Trio, Chad Mitchell Trio (the guitar player was none other than Roger McGuinn of the later Byrds), songs like Lemon Tree by Trini Lopez and Banana Boat Song by Belafonte, may qualify as folk songs. Kingston Trio, Buffy St.Marie, Odetta, Dylan, Dave VanRonk, Peter Paul and Mary, come to mind . Tom Dooley, Puff the Magic Dragon, Greenback Dollar, MTA, pop music if it hit the charts.
I'm with Bob on this. Loved the stuff from mid 60's on - that was my time. Don't forget Joan Baez. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" still brings tears to my eyes.eace:
I just saw the original SNL show where Paul Simon hosted, his guest was Art Garfunkle.I had never seen them perform together..It was amazing,I listen to all types of music, but I love it when people harmonize like that. Art sang a song by himself, however, and It just wasnt as magical as when they sang together..their voices just fit. One of my favorite of all time is C S N Y, man you talk about some harmony.Ive never heard anyone sing like them before..Im glad I got to see that on SNL though, you dont get to see things like that very often..
Yeah - now that you mention it I do remember "The Band" doing it and it was great. "The Band" was great anyway.eace:eace:
