    yes,
    and some people use tea.
i would recommend diluting tea tree oil and water into a spray. it is also calming to the scalp.

Tea tree oil does smell nice, but I find that washing mine keeps them smelling fresh. I'm sure this can vary from person to person, though.

Tea Tree oil doesn't smell nice to me...Then agian, neither does cotton candy perfume so we all have different taste in smells.
Some lady told me about rubbing scent oils in dread, in one of the stickies.

From bcmama (I think she's a herb expert lady, right?):
Mix up some water and a few drops of your favourite essential oils in a spray bottle and use whenever you want an aromatherapy treat for your locks. My favourite is a combo of peppermint & lavender.

tea tree smells too medicinal to me, you could water down whatever essential oil you like :) x x x I'd prolly use sandalwood. mmm. but I like the smell of my hair, it smells like teddy's ^-^

I have several spray bottles with essential oil /water mix, i just give it a shake and spray away. Lavender is nice, I also have Jasmine but i find that a bit sickly sweet and ofccourse tea tree for any itchies.

Don't put too much essential oil in the water, I think I nearly killed my flat mate with the toxic lavender fumes my dreads were giving off the first time..LOL

is it ok to leave it (tea tree oil and water mix) in for a while, (days) or is it best to wash soon after? : )

If it's not greasing up your hair than it's alright.
Use a tiny amount of tea tree. Less is more in this case.

I use tea tree oil regularly when I wash. It does a great job and reducing oil production, anti dandruff/itch, and great for making my hair smell for a couple days. Other than tea tree oil, the only other oil I use it patchoulli...my most favorite smell in the world aside from the smell of fresh cannabis. Anytime I use patchoulli it instantly puts me in a great mood.

why do your dreads smell bad..thats the question you should be asking
had tyou used wax? could u have a mold issue?
covering up a bad smell might not be the best solution if the bad smell comes from a bad situation like wax or mold
if so you need to address the cause of the bad smell

if you simply want to make em smell better though esential oilzs rock
but they are super strong.. a few drops do go a long long way
(try this to gewt an idea how strong..put 2 drops of pepermint on your sinuses and see how quickly your in tears with rivers of snot pouring from your nose)
esentiual oils are powerful..use very sparingly
i reemember years ago dipping my drewads in a bottle of patchoiuly, it wasnt even esential oils just the typical oils u get from middle eastern stores n stuff
walking down a sidewalk i heard ppl complaining how strong it was 100 feet away
when u use oils u become accustomed to it very quickluy and dont even notice how strong it may smell to someone else
    so be aware of that
u may not even notice the smell but it may fill the room if your not carefull to use it in a very dilutedstate

if you have a lil smell issue id try this 1st
a deep cleanse..baking soda (1/4 to 3/4 cup in bout a gallon of water) 10-20 drops tea tree oil 10-20 drops rosemary

follow that with a rince if u like, if those dont give ya the scent you looking for (theyre more for medicinal purposes but i love the smell) then u can make a rince of maybe 1/2 a cup of aloe vera gel (100% pure aloe should be in the refridgerated section) mix the aloew with a gallon of water and 5-10 drops of anmy scent you lime ..
i like to mix my own
often start with a more earthy base add a mall amount of a sweeter scent
i might mix lil myrh with egyptian musk lil patchouli and a rose or something sweeter to finnish it off
sometimes i get more complex though and may mix as many as 8-10 doifferent scents to get the perfect custom blend
