Ok we all know John Lennon was a great songwriter but all that guff about make love not war, and staying in bed for 3 weeks or whatever in protest over war, I mean WTF was that about? So forget his music a minute and concentrate on his approach to politics and my question is: John Lennon : Man of politics, or tree hugging hippy sadact that knew sweet F.A. about politics?
Honestly, I think his music was OK and imagine was an ALRIGHT song, but he really doesn't do that much for me. Mostly he struck me as a pretentious, over-rich wannaba revolutionary. He wasn't a dreamer, he was daydreamer
He most certainly made lot's of money. And the pacifist stance he seemed to take and encourage other to follow worked great, as long as you lived in a country that offered such a luxury. I never thought The Beatles offered anything to the world other than the music they were paid millions to play. I would say that The Beatles were the worlds first boy band.
It's probably hard for today's youth to appreciate just how much the Beatles transformed pop music, much aided by their open-minded and inventive producer George Martin and their intensely loyal manager Brian Epstien. When they came on the scene the charts were dominated by the likes of Tommy Steele and Cliff Richard. You can get some sense of their musical evolution by listening to the #1 CD straight through. Yes they were the first boy band, the first stadium band, the first studio-only band - but they set the pattern that everyone else followed. The reason they may sound less than original nowadays is that you've grown up hearing their echoes in every guitar band on the scene.
Wonderful point man. Personally I agree wholeheartedly with what Lennon did and said, even tho I'm not a big fan of all the beatles together. He may have been rich and pretintious, but at least he was tryin' to change somethin', thats more than the majority of the people who come on this site can say of their lives. What have you tried to change for the better in your life? Absolutly nothin' myself. I'm still tryin' to get myself straightened out before I change anything big.
