The Te Wairua Festival was held on Ralph Brock's farm at Owhango, in the King Country (N.Z.). The photograph from the organisers was origionally published in "Mushroom" in 1983 and is probably from January 1981. The last Te Wairua Festival was held in January 1984. Festivals here ceased when Ralph Brock died. Te Wairua appears to have been advertised by word of mouth and later in "Mushroom", was limited to 300 people and lasted for one week. The programme included a variety of workshops and seminars and performances. Those involved in organising the event run an alternative healing centre in Taupo today. Te Wairua was "clothing optional" as were the much bigger Nambassa Festivals and the Festivals of Plenitude held around the same time. The photograph shows the encampment and is designed to give a flavour of the event as it was taken for publicity purposes. Points of interest are : the central camp fire : the kids zone : the tents including a tipi : a small preforming stage : the bush setting : a group including several without clothing. It should be noted that as a rule women were more barebreasted rather than naked. At the smaller festivals casual nudity was more prevalent proportionwise than the bigger events though in terms of numbers the bigger events had more nudity. Social nudity at these type of festivals was very popular amongst the post-war generation. It seems to be taken up with a greater enthusiasm in N.Z. than elsewhere in the West because of the absence of social pressure against nudity. Gerald.
I sing the song because I love the man I know that some of you don't understand Milk-blood to keep from running out. I've seen the needle and the damage done A little part of it in everyone But every junkie's like a settin' sun. Neil Young - Actually this came out in '71 - after the movement veered from peace and love.
