No you dunce, its because shrapnel can go through walls, WP can't. In an urban environment, I think HE would cause fewer casualties.

Hell, every war I've ever been in I've stayed in those good ol' bomb shelters for days. We simply had them stocked up with supplies because we knew that war was imminent.

Then I hope you've got a good supply of everything. Israel is busy opening the gates of hell.

You're going to have this mess in your front yard before much longer.

    Possibly my yard too.

Because we've both got it coming.

The US had a similiar problem during the Revolutionary War. We were isolated our economics were controlled by England, and we rose up and demanded our independence. Thing was we weren't walled into a small area, and our enemy wasn't supplied with expensive superior arms by a foreign country.

This is like shooting caged rabbits and calling them rabid wolves.

As to ancient history...where's Bin Laden? Seven years and trillions of dollars and what do we have to show for it. Should we be proud that we have wasted that and millions of civilian lives to prove our manhood?

There are lessons to be learned. Torture is never justified. Governments/politicians can not be trusted. Some things like individual rights are more important than implied safety. Illegal arms like phosphorus shells can not be justified on any grounds, religious or otherwise. Much like Nagazaki and Hiroshima, as an American I would undo those events if I could. Nothing can justify them. And we question why other governments want nukes?

I would think that Israel would understand that locking people in ghettos, doesn't solve societal problems.

gardener,I'm just going to answer one of your points because this type of debate can go back and forth forever and I'm already getting bored of posting.I agree with you about the US involvement in Iraq.It was a waste in every way.I knew it from day 1.If anything the situation is now more dangerous for the world because Iran and Iraq always fought EACH OTHER.As far as Bin Laden goes he might as well be living with Bush because Bin Laden was the best thing that ever happenned to Bush. And the Bush administration used the politics of fear and too many people fell for it.But all this is an old story. And all this has nothing to do with the original topic.

It has everything to do with the drama going on today between Israel and Gaza. Irael sucked the US into the middle east conflict, and we are still supporting them with their engagements. How many Israeli troops in Iraq? What sort of monetary support are they supplying to our war with terrorism. The Bush administration is still using Bin Laden. Just read a report about their/Al Qaeda's stand on Gaza.

The problem with using white phosphorous is the external factor, like any other weapon. The chances of severely burning a civilian retrieving oil to light their lamp because the electricity is out is moderate. It's just as likely as having your apartment selectively targeted and bombed.

White phosphorous has been over-used much like tasers have, in densely populated urban areas. There have been reports of its misuse in the Iraq war and this perhaps is another case of misuse.

It's not a defensive weapon when it's being used offensively.

It can go through open windows you fool. Most of the homes in Gaza have no windows.

Hiptastic, how far does the "smoke" from one WP shell spread?
What would be the impact zone of an average HE (not a 1 tonne megabomb btw)?

At 21 what wars have you actually been in? I hope that was sarcasm.

I can't believe some of these posts. You mean there are still people out there who think war can be justified? Civilians ALWAYS get killed. And soldier-pawns who thought they didn't really have a choice. The only way to end a bunch of vicious morons beating each other up is to stop enabling it by making excuses for them. The only way to stop civilian casualties is to stop fighting in the streets. Take your foolish chest thumping into the desert where no one else is, and go to it.

Maybe in the future we could all get lucky enough to have all wars fought in the format of computer games instead of real life/real death...

    Yes.

Chapter VII of the United NationsCharter sets out the UN Security Council's powers to maintain peace. It allows the Council to "determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression" and to take military and nonmilitary action to "restore international peace and security".
