It's a tutorial I came across that I thought might offer a prespective. https://www.youtube.com/swf/l.swf?s...deo_info=1&load_modules=1&fs=1&border=1&hl=en
yeah, a bit unnecessary eh? but if people want to waste their lives trying to make dreadlocks, its not my deal
Not everyone thinks that dreads equate to something unkempt and scraggly. Some people do like to be neat.
Waste their life? Wow. The video was made for African Americans to have stylish dreads. It's an easy hairstyle for African Americans to manage. It's not a spiritual journey for them or a test of patience. Jesus Christ. We all have different motive, God forbid if someone's motive for dreads is different than yours. It's a good video, I learned alot by it and it's cool this chick is giving advice out. And hey, she's anti-wax. Kudos to her.
That's my thought. Hair is hair for some people. Achieving length is the spiritual part for me. People always say that African Americans can't grow long hair and knocking down that stereotype makes me happy. And dreads no matter who has them is a test of patience. There's that awkward phase that makes you want to rip them out but then....sleek wonderful dreads.
i'm an animal and my dreads are part of that, natural. if i styled them then i would be resisting that.
hey man, each to their own, i don't mean to insult anyone by saying that. her views don't coincide with mine, and that's okay, but i'm not trying to be as harsh as you take on!
yikes, i hope thats all she does to put them in. i was cringing whenever she pulled the skin off her face yuck, especially around the tempel, that is a sensitive spot. i guarantee these locks go through some kind of messy phase without heavy regular maintenance. the 3 strand twist is as loose as the 2 strand by the end of the video if you want some indication. but hey, i dont need to say it, most of us know by now what stress will do. if you really are drawn to methods like this i'm sure they will last a long time if you load up on the right nutrients. scraggy mess is quite the overstatement when you consider how well things often turn out. but if you dont want to define between growing locks and having locks i guess you dont have to.
Yeah, the OP wanted to show different methods, and I appreitiate that. I respect all methods but I don't like biased comments on how anything that's not natural is vain, pathetic and pointless. Not saying that's what's going on here but i hear it all the time from purist. Dreads are dreads. Ironically some purist end up being bigger slaves to their dreads than people that didnlt go natural.
you said it i'm not growing dreads for the spiritual stuff, i could care less about the spirituality lol i just like how they look and that's motivation enough
Scraggy mess actually does define quite a few people's dreads in my eyes. There's different definitions of turning out well
Yeah, my dreads are spiritual but no more than most things in my life. I have an evolving spirituality, and I know enough to be aware my beliefs aren't going to coincide with everyone elses, so why should I care what others believe? Make your hair as spiritual as you want, but it's still hair. Everything just IS, without preset notions. And a lot of people are very much slaves to their dreads; if you know hair will dread if left alone (which I know because it's how mine are forming) why are you policing what others can and can't do? Why aren't we giving dreadheads a good name by actively being involved in something meaningful? If our dreads are so spiritual, why aren't we acting like spiritual beings and get out there and do something worthwhile whether it's a soup kitchen or building a house or even just hiking. What is the spirituality of dreads if we are dictators of what others can do? Is that a spirituality we want? Spreading the word is excellent, but really, aren't there better things to do than this bickering and self righteousness?
It's one thing if they're forming and quite another if it's been three years and it looks like you just rolled out of bed (vs. having dreads).
funny thing we have someone with a 3 year update here on the front page with a wicked set. backcombed once
i dont believe i said there was anything wrong with starting with something that looks like locks. i often recommend backcombing because they are going to resembles something like locks early more than anything else and the maintenance that follows is the same easy stuff that most natural people do. there are a lot of misconceptions going on, do you read the forum here? all i recommend are things that grant the highest yield with the least effort/risk.
