End the war on drugs change.org

We have the highest non-violent incarceration rate in the world. We need to free up our police, jails and courts to deal with people who actually pose a clear and present danger to life and liberty. Stop persecuting non-violent drug users. Prefer regulation to prohibition and give up on this "war" that can never be won.

Legalize the Medicinal and Recreational Use of Marijuana. change.org

    13,986 Votes

"Marijuana has been proven to relieve the suffering of the chronically ill, as well as disabled patients undergoing chemotherapy, and other forms of medical treatments, yet using it for medical purposes continues to be a crime in most of the country. We should make it legal not only in medical cases, but for recreational use as well."
    - Jose Torres (Unemployed / Disabled / Activist / Supporter), Newark, NJ

    * this idea has been merged with another idea that qualified for the final round, "Decriminalize Marijuana/Hemp," submitted by Joshua Gomez from Aurora, CO and which received 6,217 votes through January 13. All votes were transferred except for those submitted by people who voted for both ideas to avoid double counting.

    End Prohibition

Bring the war on drugs to an end. Tax and regulate the distribution of drugs the same as alcohol, and take billions of dollars from the coffers of criminals and terrorists. As long as criminals are selling the drugs they will continue to market these substances to our children. Lets start with marijuana, and consider other drugs as time goes by and the benefits become apparent.

    Ending Marijuana Prohibition

I suggest that we step back and take a non-biased "Science Based" approach to decide what should be done about the "Utter Failure" that we call the War on (some) Drugs.

The fact is that Marijuana is much less harmful to our bodies than other Legal Drugs such as Tobacco and Alcohol. And for the Government to recognize Marijuana as having Medicinal Properties AND as a Schedule I drug (Has NO medicinal Properties) is an obvious flaw in the system.

We must stop imprisoning responsible adult citizens choosing to use a drug that has been mis-labeled for over 70 years.

I just read an article on how Obama is ignoring the fact that MJ prohibition issueas are the 4th most asked on Change.gov and he has not addressed them at all in recent statements.

    Here's the link:

People are mad about it and claiming he is a farce. Another poster on a different site pointeed out that he is probably avoiding making mj repeal his first big move. We have to remember he is everybody's president and most people in the US still think mj is the devil. They wouldn't be happy with him jumping on thehippy soapbox first off, and it would probably hurt his ability to work in the future.

I half agree with that theory, but I think its important that we keep the issue at the forefront.

change.org is a private forum and they say they will present the top questions but it is still a private forum and they have manipulated some of the results and linked questions.

change.gov is Obama's site and they too side stepped the question on the first round with a simplistic nonanswer like Obama doesn't plan on legalizing marijuana at this time. This round may be the same. Like El Paso dared to suggest asking the question about legalizing and the mayor vetoed it because of all the heat he got from the Feds. Threats to cut off highway funds. Just for asking...
