so basically I didn't know I had to 'rip' till last night. People were just telling me to leave em as they are. But yesterday I realli had a look at them and started ripping. It felt good once I got started but some of the hair was too mushed together that I had to cut it to sepearte the 2 dreads. Is it bad to cut them? It was excruciating to just rip them apart and figured all they are doing is breaking anyway. Is this ok???? They are 2mos old...I'll rip at lease once a week now so it should get easier with up keep right?

yes, ripping becomes harder and harder as dreads from the root start combining and "congoing" into one dread. Rip once a week, and avoid cutting through unless you REALLY have to, be careful when cutting, take little snips off carefully as you go down. I have yet to use scissors or anything, as I've been ripping "frequently". Once a week is perfectly fine, and its what I try to go for. Just don't rip all too often as it can weaken the base and develop weaker roots not capable of holding your dreads.

I only snipped little threads if hair that had joined together. The ripping wasn't working so I had to cut. It's hard to figure out the back ones...whats the difference between cutting and ripping? why is cutting bad? cuz ripping the hairs hurtssss and causes my hair to go kinda stringy (the leftover ones) if ya know what i mean

i've done that before and it should be ok. don't do it unless you really have to but the cut hairs just got sucked into my dreads anyway.:D

I cut because ripping hurts my scalp way way too much. Hasn't hindered my dreads dreading.

cutting can make knots come out and create sections of fine hair that is too short to dread itself. stick with ripping as best you can, cut those you have to i guess

I rip after I get out of the shower. I can better distinguish which roots are which dreads and so on. Plus the wet hair slides and stretches some so it doesn't hurt like a bitch :)

no not down the middle. I just cut at the root where some threads of hair were joining where I didn't want them to

I think the difference between ripping and cutting the connecting hairs is, when ripped they are broken and try to attach themselves to other dreads, when cut its a flat edge that doesn't want to so much:)
I find if there is a big chunk attaching two dreads I pull it apart into small sections then rip :) Helps the loose hair left find its way home :)

play with your hair more and you will get to know where it likes to connect.
