So im planning on going travelling this summer... travelling in the most environmentally friendly, fun and refreshing way possible.. on my bike!

I plan to stick to country roads, wild camp with either a small tent of a few sheets of tarp, visit various festivals and gatherings and just see friends, see places and hopefully join up for some ecological actions at protest sites or the Kingsnorth rolling blockade if its going.

So... anyone got any tips, experiences? the one thing that concerns me now is food, how to get it without having to carry it around, and i want to spend as little money as possible!

It'll be interesting! Do you plan on pulling a tiny 'baby' trailer for your stuff?

I've been planning on traveling on my bike for extended periods of time as well, though I've never done anything like this. After I graduate in the spring I am going to ride around Colorado to get the feel for it. I think I need a new bike though, I have an old Trek Mountain Bike and it weighs a metric ton (slight exaggeration). I think I should invest in a lighter trail bike. I need a few other basic materials before I hit the road:

    1. Trailer or side-cargo
    2. Camouflage Bivy Bag (for stealth camping)
    3. A good knife & hatchet
    4. Maybe a light-weight traveling guitar
    5. And I'm thinking of getting a netbook or iphone so I can keep in touch with family/friends back home, access the internet, use the gps, take pictures with it, etc.

One thing I'm concerned about is asshole police officers and criminals who may want to rob me. I want a military-grade utility knife for camping and a means of defense, but I'm not sure about the legality of such things. My state has a law on 3 1/2 inch blades and I think I might need something larger, but I don't want to get it confiscated and get in trouble with a stupid law.

    Hi,

last week the police nabbed a young man on a nearby autobahn. He was on the way to his girl friend - roller skating ;).

    Regards
    Gyro
