There's this place in Sedona that has absolutely the best veggie burgers in the world, and since eating them, I haven't found an equivalent. I was wondering if someone has a good recipe for them?

I don't know about these burgers you are talking about but here is a recipe I really like. They are certainly better than most processed veggie burgers you get.

    http://www.theveggietable.com/recipes/blackbeanburgers.html

Black Bean Burgers These black bean veggie burgers from Jamaica are spicy and delicious.
Yield 4 burgers Time 20 minutes

    Tools

    • large frying pan
    • wooden spoon
    • food processor
    • large bowl
    • frying pan
    • spatula
    Ingredients
    • 2 T olive or vegetable oil
    • 1½ c onions, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 T fresh ginger, minced
    • ½ t allspice
    • ½ t nutmeg
    • 1½ c black beans, cooked or canned
    • 1½ c cooked rice
    • ½ habanero pepper or 1 jalapeño pepper, chopped (seeds optional)
    • 1 c bread crumbs
    • 1 t salt
    • black pepper
    Directions

Heat 1 T of oil and sauté the onions, stirring occasionally, until they soften, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger, allspice, and nutmeg and sauté for two more minutes.

    Pour
into food processor along with beans, rice, and peppers. Pulse repeatedly, until mixture is chopped, not puréed.

    Transfer
to bowl, add remaining ingredients, and mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings.

    Shape
into four patties, adding more bread crumbs if necessary.

    Fry
in 1 T oil over medium heat until crust forms, about 4 minutes per side.

wouldn't it be wonderful if people contributed, rather than made the same old stands?

I've tried a few recipes so far... nothing stands out, but they've all been pretty good. My favorites have all been black bean/lentil & rice based.

Does anyone know the trick to getting these to stick together though? Mine always end up looking more like "sloppy joe" than an actual burger & I'd really like something that holds together enough to grill - if that's possible.
    love,
    mom

mama, you need binding of some sort. I thought of flours...and you are GF, so what does that leave you with? Corm meal fine grind??

You could also use some tofu to hold it together, I'd bet.

*smacks forehead* Of COURSE! Thank you!!!

Let me see... I've got rice flour, cornmeal, potato starch, tapioca starch, bean flour, amaranth flour, and almond meal hiding in the freezer. I'm thinking the tapioca or amaranth are my best bets for making things "stick" though the almond MIGHT work too & would be yummy! (Yeah, I have flour - it's just not made from grain & must be combined for decent results!)

OH! I just remembered that Mom uses oatmeal to bind her meatloaf together! There ARE GF-oats out there too, but at $5 per 1lb box I'm leery of using them too often... and my LHFS tends to be out of them 2 out of every 3 times I go there so it's hard to count on them as a "staple." Then again, how often am I gonna eat a grilled veggie-burger? In three years I can count the times I've tried on one hand.
    love,
    mom

you mentioned meatloaf. I called my mom and asked what the fat content of that mix would be like.
She chuckled and said "heart attack on a plate."
So, if you could emuslify a good fat with a starch, that would work like an egg, I'd think.

    or... lentil flour?

Those burgers I believe are from morning star and they are the "garden " burger. I remember hearing about BK selling them .... ha
A long time ago I bought a box of "garden burgers" but I dislike them theres somthing about the random watercress and stuff like that just doesnt hit me right
    LOL

    Anywho

That blackbean burger sounds delicious Walker!!
I havent actually made my own veggie burgers before but I would love to try!! I am kind of sick of buying the packaged stuff when I can make it myself LOL

My favorite veggie burger is boca vegan

For the longest time I was addicted to the california veggie burger from Dr.Praegers. Now I am not to fond of it because I use to eat them all the time
But I would totally reccomend them though :D

I have a recipe I really like. It's from a cookbook I got as a gift for doing some volunteer work, so I hope I'm not violating any laws here, but here it is:

    Easy Garbanzo-Oat Burgers:

2 teaspoons canola oil (any cooking oil will do, really)
    1.5 cups chopped onion
2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats (not instant)
    .5 cup ground walnuts
1 cup cooked or canned garbanzo beans, rinsed well and drained
    3/4 cup low-fat non-dairy milk
    3/4 teaspoon salt
    .5 teaspoon garlic granules
    .5 teaspoon onion granules
    1/4 teaspoon celery seed
    1/4 teaspoon dried sage

    1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and saute 10-15 minutes, or until tender and browned.
    2. Place the oats and walnuts in a large mixing bowl, toss and set aside.
    3. Place the remaining ingredients in a blender and process until smooth and creamy. Pour the mixture into the oat mixture, add the onions and mix well. The resulting mixture will be very stiff. Allow it to sit for 5 minutes so that the oats can absorb the liquid.
    4. Form the mixture into 8 thin, flat patties, using about 1/3 cup per patty. Place them on a sheet of wax paper as soon as they are formed.
    5. Once again, heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then brown the burgers slowly (5-7 minutes per side), turning once.

Love them so much. Best veggie burger I've ever had.
