this book is aimed at teenage girls, such as myself, but i read it, and i dont understand the big hype? sure, the main character is the perfect guy by a lot of girls standards, but he's fictional! it is a good book, but not to where people should be obsessing about it. opinions?

    FUCK TWILIGHT.

i will preface this by saying that i have only read the first three and i know what happens in the fourth one, though i didn't bother to read it.

This "saga" is one of the most clumsily written, terribly antifeminist, ridiculously stupid, mary sue groupings of literature i have ever bothered to lay my eyes upon. my dad bought me the first three saying "oh hey, i saw something about this author on tv, she's supposed to be really good, like the american j.k. rowling" so i was like hell yeah maybe there's something cool here. this was before i knew about the fucking cult following of the series. so i read her other book--host--first, which wasn't a terrible read, i'd actually kind of recommend it. so i was like okay cool, this should be fun.
i started reading the first one and thought "eehh, i can really tell this was her first novel" it sounds fan-fictiony and immature. the main character, bella, is so obviously mary sue it's disgusting. i remember when i was in 4th or 5th grade, i'd write screenplays about myself where i was beautiful and popular and i had my own horse and the boy i liked wanted me bad and etc etc. that's what twilight reminds me of. i'm pretty sure high school BLEW for stephenie meyer so she wrote these stories about her fantasy of what she wished high school would be like. she moves to this new school and everyone likes her, girls are jealous of her, boys are asking her out right and left...it's sickening. and the plot is sketchy and hard to follow. i kept reading to see if it would get better, but it really didn't. the second one was DUMB, it took her about 300 pages too many to figure out that what's-his-face is a werewolf, i figured that out in the first fucking book. i dunno the second one felt like meyer wrote it, realized, shit this is way shorter than i need it to be, and then added 150 pages of bullshit in the middle to drag it out. i can't even really remember what happened in the third one to be honest.
what makes me really sad is the droves of girls who read these books and say "THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ" "IT'S SO GOOD IF YOU DONT THINK SO YOU MUST BE DUMB AND NOT HAVE A BRAIN EDWARD IS THE PERFECT MAN" blah blah. when really, the writing sucks. the plot sucks. the idea sucks. the ending of the series BLOWS. stephenie meyer did not deserve to become famous for this bullshit she passes off as literature. these people are saying this is the best book ever written when they have never even heard of jack kerouac or kurt vonnegut. or george orwell etc. they have no idea what they are missing! there is ZERO sophistication in the twilight series. the relationship portrayed is totally sexist, the writing is abominable (i will say this over and over again) and the plot is underdeveloped AT BEST.
as you can see, i PASSIONATELY HATE twilight. i think that there is not enough criticism in the world to cover the shittiness of these books. yes i'm exaggerating a bit because i just really hate them, but it pisses me off how CRAZY people went over these books! saying they're better than harry potter even!! FUCK THAT SHIT! the harry potter books had incredible character development, one of the most complex and elaborate plots ever, incredibly eloquent and dignified writing style, and they were actually....stimulating! i found twilight boring and predictable. except the end of the series, and that was like she was trying to throw a curveball and just ended up being way the fuck inappropriate. how dare people even consider comparing stephenie meyer to a genius like jk rowling. ugh it makes me sick.
oh and the fucking movie! how stupid does that look! i haven't seen it and more than likely wont, but it looks choppy and overly-dramatic. and the actress looks kinda stiff and unnatural, i think her name is kristen stewart or something? i saw her in that one movie into the wild or something and she was allright, but nothing special. rob pattinson is kind of unmemorable. i remember seeing the harry potter movie he was in and i can't really remember his acting or how he was in it....UGH!
well i should probably shut up now. i could go on for hours about how terrible i think twilight is. lol fuck twilight that's all i have to say!

oh another thing i hate about bella is how incredibly exaggerated her selflessness is. it is to the point of fucking....stupidity! to the point that it actually affects others! that is something i cannot stand in people.

lol sorry i had to add on a little more hate.

To me this story seemed to be just about sex. If you take out that he's a vampire its just a young girl who likes the guy and wants him. She will do anything up to becoming a vampire to get him. As much as he resists she wont give up. She is more seducing him than the other way around as he tries his best not to give into her. It is a pretty pathetic story line no matter how you look at it. It's very drawn out.

I love it. I'm on my third readthrough at the moment... and have finally given into the temptation of adding annotations, underlining my favorite quotes, writing my speculations... It looks like I'm preparing a huge Twilight essay. I remember I had come across this opinion poll which says 'Finding a girl that doesn't like the 'twilight' series is near impossible.' very true in my case.

It's our new fucking bible. Haven't you heard?

(note the sarcasm here, please. Don't think I praise this book)

Damn, I'd really hate to be a vampire the way pop culture is using and abusing the blood suckers. I mean casting Tom Cruise as Lestat is one thing, but the whole Twilight phenomenon just takes the stupidity to a whole new level.

Oh and yes, I've read it. Hahaha.

Thank you all so much for re-affirming my faith in humankind.
I swear, if I had to go through hearing another one of my peers (British peers, I might add. Unfortunately, that thing of a book has made its way overseas) squeal about how much they loved Twilight and how amazing Edward was, I might have had to shut my head in a locker.
Honestly, I look at real books, good stuff, Orwell, Nabakov, Burgess, Tolkein, and even modern ones. Granted, J. K. Rowling does not have the same mastery of words as the authors I've just listed, but her books were great because of the imagination and the world that she created. Twilight just has nothing. It's poorly written, the plot is dull, and the characters are less dimensional than the inside of a vacuum. The fact that it managed to get published is, to me, a disappointing testament to how low the standards of literature have dropped, and how hooked people can become on this tripe.
Ah, well. That's my rant for the day. Now, back to happy thoughts...

I'm about three quarters of the way throught "Twilight". While I don't find it to be the worst book I've ever read, I am very disappointed. I was so excited to read it, but then my friends who had already read it told me not to bother, but I'm stubborn. I'm not that into the book, but I'll finish the whole series and see the movie. I just can't not finish something. And that is the only reason.

It isn't bad..but good books are completely different :D
I agree with Ksnake, it's simply a story about a girl and a boy tha desire each other..vampires and their "superpower" aren't so important, because for a girl in love, her boyfriend is always perfect.

i worked at borders for the midnight release party of the 4th book. it was ridiculous. squealing girls everywhere. i felt like i was doing security at a my chemical romance concert.

the books are trite, the author is terribly long-winded (she admits this on her site, that she didn't know a first novel wasn't supposed to be 600 pages) and the books fall prey to the pap virus. i don't want to touch them for fear of contracting some sort of stupidity disease.

i got my jollies on anne rice, okay. i've nothing against vampires, even smutty vampires. but this is just pathetic.

There should be a national bonfire of all Twilight books (this from the girl who condemmns most book burnings). I admit that Meyer had a few good ideas, but the books made me want to kill something.

    Vampires do not sparkle
Edward was ridiculously possessive. Call the DSS. Seriously.
    Rosalie was a bitch
    Carlisle was too soft
    Esme tries too hard
    Emmet...man, fuck jocks
Bella needs to get over herself
Did I mention that vampires don't sparkle?

I actually liked Jasper, but I have a thing for deep southern accents.

I suspect I might be the only male to read this book. It took lots of effort to push through to the end but I made it. It was almost unbearable to read.

For sure there is alot of "gosh hes so amazing and fantastic and it will physically hurt me to be parted from him" stuff comming from bella, and the way edward is sooo overprotective and how everything is so melodramatic, it can wear on you a bit. But i can understand why young teen girls get so hyped up about it (i am not one of those hyped girls, i just read, anything and alot). Young girls want to believe that there is a perfect romance out there for them, that there are perfect guys, and i think this book kind of gives it to them. Maybe they are all too young yet to have dicovered anything decent and this was the biggest thing that passed their way. This story does show an intense, passionate relationship where the characters get everything they want and live forever in happiness blah blah blah. so in that way i think it hit the spot for the younger dreamy teen girls. I enjoyed the books, but i dont delve too deep into them.

As for the movie, i actually really enjoyed it, i liked the music and i thought the camera work looked awesome. I like kristen stewart in into the wild and i adore rob pattinson as a musician, but in the movie i think they were just a little mediocre. But i wont go around running it down. I think sometimes people actually criticise the movie or the books just because there is such a big hype around it. I ignore the hype, who cares, take it for what it is, a book or a movie. And i thought they were ok, light entertainment, but nothing to get too caught up in.

as humans we are all so diverse, different things appeal and inspire different people for all different reasons, i think we should be careful in running down someone, or a group of people, for enjoying or being inspired by something, its freedom of choice and we should all love each other despite our movie or book prefrences yakno?

Was discussing it on this book forum earlier today actually, it just makes me angry how dominating it is at the moment! Horrific if you ask me - at least Harry Potter had a little bit of depth and wasn't ruled by a rubbish romance story. Still, Meyer has made a lot of money.

I read the first twilight book, as it was recommended countless times to me. I must add that these recommendations were from women.

All in all, it was crap. Even if the story was the slightest bit original, her writing was atrocious. But then, I finally got around to finishing Ulysses the day before I started it, so I feel Joyce may have biased my take on it somewhat.

do you think perhaps you should actually watch the movie the whole way thru before criticising it?

I used to like the books. But then I read them a second time and they seemed so cliche and all the characters are so fucked up.

Alice: her annoying ass won't shut up
    Edward: biggest douche EVER
bella: people give her waaaaay too much credit than she deserves. WTF?!
