Ok so at the end of august i went to a salon to get my dreads done because i knew noone who would do them for me. Its been a few months and they arent doing much, they've not locked to tight, seem to go flat, and the salon put braids in which looks ridiculous.:( Can some one give me some advice to make them lock faster/be rounder/grow out of braids please?

I can't give you much in the way of advice as I am experiencing similar things at around four months. get the braids out (will probably take a while and hurt) and then let them do their thing.

most the dreads I had in the back of my head have fallen out, (I had them crocheted) but now I've resigned myself to waiting and letting them do their own thing. some days I love them, some days I think they look like shit.

It'd be good to see a picture...
Braids will dread up if you leave them for long enough, but sometimes can take a very long time if your hair's really straight or greasy etc.

Why can't you just leave your dreads alone? Sorry, but 4 months into being dreaded isn't really anything.
Everybody's dreads will look bad for the first 6 months depending on hair type. You really don't need to go back to the salon.

I had my dreads done by a salon too. They also said come back every month. I have never been back since. Trust me. In another 4 months they'll look bad ass.

In my opinion dreads start looking worse before they get better. Buy a woollen tam, wear it at night and forget about them.

I still don't understand the braids part I've heard of backcombing, patience, and crochet. What's the braid method?

Ill have to wait to see the pictures, but depending on how those look I'd go demand money back. They promised you dreads, and if what they did doesnt work....

I believe it's just braids. You section your hair into little pony tails and then braid em...it's not the most effective method for dreading hair. It takes even longer for the hair to dread that way. But with time and patience it will eventually dread.

Interesting, i assume braids wouldn't have much movement to dread.

They backcombed it then pulled it apart a little and put braids in to "hold it together"

damn, you got ripped. im sorry to hear that.

there's really no point in starting over, unless they have done some mega damage to your hair. just keep your head healthy, don't do none of that back combing, palm rolling or any crap that you see on youtube, it will just weaken your hair and weak locks will fall off.

all you need to do now is wait. don't do any maintenance to your hair except for maybe try to keep them from eating each other... or not, if you dont the locks will keep forming into bigger locks again and again until they form one super lock. i suggest separating the ones trying to eat each other when you feel you have the size and shape of the locks you want.

your hair probably looks different from any set of young locks out there, but no one gets attractive young locks. they will eventually grow into the set you've been dreaming of. just remember there are no shortcuts, no matter how expensive.

Hmmm....Ive never heard of that. So, they knotted it up [which is good] but then pulled it apart and braided it? You should really go get your money back if possible! Tell them that after doing some research youve realized that there method is completely bogus and your hair is not making any progress. You should probablly start the journey over and use this forum to help you along the way! Sorry about gettin off to a bad start but if you start over now this time next year you'll have locks! :)

I love how the only way to do it is the forum's way.

OP, dreads take time. Even if you start over, you'd still get 4 months in and not have super cool looking dreads. No matter how you start them, they don't get perfect overnight.

the forum's way is not the only way, most people just feel that it's the best way
then again "best" is subjective to other methods
    w/e works lol

i have two braid/dreads. when i first started i wanted to have a couple of braids with my dreads. i keep braiding them whenever they start to fall apart, and now the top is dreaded about 3 inches and pretty tight. though, it's not very effective for the entire midshaft and ends to dread. it could be good if you wanted to establish sections, and didn't mind waiting a lot longer than even natural. i think there is a girl who did hers that way and if i recall they were very pretty.

ive got 2 that are pretty much braids too but when the braids become loose they start to lock in the sections where the hair isn't tight.
