Type O Negative; 'gothic' Metal

Don't let the 'gothic' tag fool you, these guys are a far cry from mascara wearing, Wiccan pussies. They's made a career out of mocking the gothic subculture, using witty lyrics, crushing riffs, and one of metal's strongest (and perhaps least appreciated) vocalists. Any fan of any sort of rock music should check these guys out.

Mono ; Post-Rock

Post-rock is a genre with peaks that are some of the best music out there, yet it's also very easy to make half-assed, shitty, uninspired post-rock. I've just been getting into Mono recently, but I am extremely impressed. They've managed to become my 2nd favorite Post-Rock band in a matter of days (Godspeed is still my favorite). I'll post a Youtube video even though that format doesn't do this genre justice. All I can say is that anyone who likes good music needs to acquire You Are There anyway they can.

Elliott Smith; Indie Acoustic

One of the greatest musicians of our time. A beautiful voice and style combined with deep meaningful lyrics. He was an alcoholic and addicted to heroin and crack for much of his career. He attempted suicide multiple times and finally killed himself after getting clean in 2003. His songs are sort of downbeat, but in a good way.
