I'm posting hear because I want tell the people nearest to the problem first. But this really needs to get out. So please tell all. Research it a little and think even the most stalwart modernist will feel funny about it too...the sensitive will be outraged. Here's a quote of the David Suzuki website : "Mining companies are discarding their toxic leftovers in our lakes right now! Tail Lake (Nunavut) and Scully-Wabush Lake (Newfoundland) have already been approved and the federal government is reviewing applications to okay 14 more Decisions on eight bodies of water will be made by the end of this year." there is more info there http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Oceans/Take_Action/Protect_Canadian_Lakes.asp detailing maps and the like Also the CBC has an excellent article which gives a few different points of veiw and details the legal loophole that circumvents the fisheries and wildlife act. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/06/16/condemned-lakes.html?ref=rss There is also a lake slated in Northern Manitoba, that is, if I don't miss my guess, part of the water table that supports the big lake Winnipeg. That could make people sick pretty far and wide. One of the lakes that is slated for destruction is in BC and is the sacred headwaters for three salmon streams. This is crazy, salmon are more valuable than any gold or metal would ever be to me. I'm sure the others are just as special. I also learned that this law only came about after a few mines in NWT had already dumped in a number of lakes. They were never fined and the law was instilled and they companies were protected under it retroactivly. Get it? They broke the law, poisoned the land then the government changed the law to protect them. Now this bad idea is gaining momentum. Designating living lakes as dead zones is legal! and requires no public discussion. Pardon me? Anyone else feeling their hackles rise? Then tell some else please and let's get this ball rolling. Clean water is fast becoming the most precious substance on earth (always was...) and yet this madness is trying to happen right behind our backs.
