Hello. I am one of the younger hippies on this site (only 13 to be exact). I learned about hippies when I discovered how much better the 60's was then now. It seems now that everyone wants to be a gangster and kill. Thats also how music is now. Well I wanted away with that. I decided to become a hippie, since the lifestyle seems to fit me. I am totally for peace and love and anti war. I am too young for drugs, but I will probably try them when I am older. Anyway, I was wondering, how did hippies live back in the 60's. I know most of them were unemployed and didn't have much money. How did they get money? My mom (who lived back then, but unfortunately wasn't a hippie and disliked them) told me they mostly stole money. I believe that some of them might have, but not most of them. When I turn 18 I plan to save for an RV and live in it. I know a lot of hippies live in buses/ RVs, but again I'm not sure how to get money. My only "good" idea was to advertise on my RV, considering I would be traveling a lot. But doing that I might contribute to current society, which I don't want to do. So to sum this all up, my main question will be: How will I support my self, while being a traditional hippie? Also, are there still a lot of hippies around? Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to live a life where I work for some greedy man for like 30 years, then retire (maybe), and have limited fun for 10-15 years, while I could have had fun for my entire life, while helping society. Thanks!
Don't completely look at helping society as a bad thing. Yeah, supporting a greedy system of capitalism like we have now may be a bad thing, but think of helping society as spreading positive energy and try to get rid of these sorts of things.
It was very cheap to live back then. At 13 you should'nt be thinking so far ahead. Learn how to make something you enjoy making and could sell. T-shirts will always be popular. Maybe learn to dye or silkscreen them. Good luck.
Listen to the music, most of what you need to know is right there. You don't need to do drugs to be a hippie. No, most hippies do not steal. Learn some crafts, you can sell crafts or art work anywhere. And learn to barter for things. Learn to do without and remember you trade your time for money, so if you want more free time learn to need less money. Also it is possible to work for the man without becoming a mindless drone. Service jobs are good in that you can be helpful to those who need it and show love for others, while saving up for your van. There are still a lot of hippies around, you just need to know how to look. PS Remember that Free Love does not mean Free Sex. You need to learn how to show Love to everyone but that does not mean you have to have sex with them, only if you want to.
Reread OlderWaterBrother’s post. Think about what he is staying to you. You should be careful about choosing a mold and then forcing yourself into it. Be yourself at all times. Read about the ‘60s. Listen to the music as OlderWaterBrother said. Allow the ideas to wash over you …. those that fit you will be automagically absorbed …. you don’t even have to try. Get to know and love yourself …. enjoy the journey …. look ahead and not back …. read Carlos Castaneda
eace:Being a hippie is not a look - it is a life style. Sure, most old hippies started out with long hair but that was a symbol for being against the system. Most of us now have haircuts that would pass most anywhere. When you are young you have a lot more freedom. Not so many things to weight you down. Enjoy it - live it - be it. If you have the desire or the need to cut your hair - do it. True hippies are about Love & Peace which is an internal thing. Drugs - again - do what you feel is right for you. Do 'em or don't do'em it doesn't effect who you are. Sometimes they can open your eyes and sometimes they can fu** you up. I spent 6 months in jail when I was 19 - that was not kool. Stealing - That is an insult. Hippies pull their own weight - they just don't have a lot to lift. Freedom's just another word for nothing to lose - Joplin. No need to steal - earn what you need - you really won't need much if you live in the spirit of love and Peace. So much to say - so little time. Peace
I think you're trying to put yourself into a very sterotypical image of a hippie. Listen to music, show goodwill to people in your life (even if they are only there for a moment), help people that need it. If you are eventually going to do drugs, make sure you are mentally ready. Some can really mess you up if you don't know what you're doing. Live one day at a time, things will sorta fall into place, and so will you. Have fun, and try not to concern yourself with so many things right now. You are young!
Dudley Do Right was there, he knows .... but here's my view: Being a hippie is not a look - it's not a life style, it's a state of mind. One very strong opinion about drug use: nothing stronger than caffeine until you're 16. Damn sure nothing dangerous like nicotine! Between now and 16 take a close look at the stoners in your life. Then make informed and thoughtful choices. I'd say nothing stronger than pot and a little alcohol until you're 18. I have 20 & 21 y.o. sons in college dorms ... one parties and the other has too heavy a study load to smoke, but he does some alcohol. I'm not anti-drug, but I am saying that you need to tread very carefully ... it's a dangerous path. The most dangerous spot on that path is when it passes close to the law. Do not do any of those drugs unless it is legal for you to do them at your age and in your location. Do not become a criminal!
Being a hippie is from the inside, out. If the inside is hippie then you don't have to worry about the outside. That will take care of it's self.
Some good advice here. Work is honorable and we all need to work at something. There is nothing wrong with having a "job". Just don't pick one that is harmful to you or others or the earth. If you don't want college, having a trade is a very honorable thing to have/do. Many benefit society in a positive way. We all (hippies and straights alike) need good tradsmen and women. Troll, Olderwater and Dudley in particular have all three presented very sound advice. Hippies don't steal. Thieves steal and they can come from any social group or class.
hey I'm a young hippie too but i don go around saying that I'm a hippie i just have internal peace and love and people call me a hippie so don't worry about it to much its ok just be happy we should come together we should plan something like a human be-in or something like Woodstock were old and new hippies can come together please lets do something
^^^ way to cover your ass OT Don't want them knockin' on your door But right is right. Hey Kid Don't sweat it, your going to be what you were meant to be no matter what you do. Your true nature will begin to develop and you charecter will form and you will grow into yourself. Don't worry what others think. Be yourself, read some books, there are several on sale right here in Hip Forums. Stay loose and don't become concrete. Learn to float through the Universe and not get trapped by it. Become one with nature, plant some trees/flowers. Don't hassle yourself too much about the future, live for right now. Be the best you, you can be. Hippieness is kinda Zen like, read, attend some seminars. Be the change you seek in others. Learn to Listen to what you intuition is telling you. Find yourself before you try to find others like you. Keep away from the hard core 'drugs' like heroin, coke, meth, and pills. They rob the Spirit of it's Divinity. They leave you empty and drain you of your love. If you stick to nature, nature will stick to you. Try to stay with the natural sources of Enlightenment, like Weed and Mushrooms. They are safe and not as frightening as LSD or DMT. I never had a bad trip after hundreds of doses over the five yrs I injested LSD-25. But you must remember that not all the LSD that is going around is true LSD. It is better to NOT take chances with your physicologocal Being. It was thrust upon me and the rest of us old hippies. We were compelled. We were drawn together by an inner calling. We did not resist bc it is what we came to do. It was why we were born. Our contribution in making the shift. Don't try too hard. It will all fall into place as you grow and experience new awakenings. Bright Blessings on your journey sh
my advice would be to just not worry about it and live life man... something will eventually click for you and your "future" will take shape and make more sense. just remember nobody is in control of anything except you! i just decided i'm going to be a teacher, the most rewarding job i could think of.. summers off to travel toO!
