Keep the same schedule for going to bed every night...even on weekends or whenever your days off are. I read somewhere that naps during the day can interfere with sleeping at night. Personal I use sleeping pills but I wouldn't reccomend that for everyone else.

Alcohol & coffee after dinner can also mess up your sleep...but when I was a kid, my mom would give us warm milk before bedtime.

Keep the bedroom dark and/or wear some type of eye masks...you can even try covering the windows with dark blankets to block out the sun.

This would be useful if my brain didn't simply refuse to shut down. I very much envy the ability to easily drop to sleep because I've had varying levels of insomnia for a couple decades. "Suck it up and just go to sleep" is the most singularly frustrating response I could get when trying to deal with my body's seeming inability to sleep at times.

After a considerable time fishing for solutions and coming up empty the best thing I can say is as Squawkers7 said, keep the same schedule and try to avoid stimulants.

As for me- I'm anticipating an extended struggle with sleeplessness as this week work has scheduled second shift to work first shift hours to cover the shift layoff. Last night I got two hours of sleep. Hopefully exhaustion will induce better rest tonight but I have the re-adjustment back to my normal schedule to look forward to. To the OP- good luck and if you stumble on something that works well, kindly share! :)

help getting to sleep & getting a good sleep scedule i will keep the same bed time routine.

dont drink caffine or have any products with caffine in (most cold & flu remidies contain caffine, i found out while taking some before bed when i was ill & couldnt sleep) after 6pm.

try not to eat after 8pm, especially a big meal.

dont watch TV or have a computer in your bedroom & dont watch TV or use a computer an hour before bed. try reading a relaxing book with the lights turned down.

dont have any big harsh bright lights on, try some nice mood lighting.

a relaxing bath, with lavender bubble bath or bath bomb & a good book by candle light help me to drop off.

i tend to keep the same routine every night, about 8pm i turn the lights down or put mood lighting on while i watch TV down stairs or surf the net. about 10.30pm i run a bath with relaxing bath oil, read in the bath for 30-45mins. after my bath i will go & get in bed with the lights tuned down low & maybe read for a short while longer. my fiance jenerally comes up at this point & we either just hold each other or have sex before going to sleep (an orgasm is a great sleep inducer). i also have a big bunch of lavender tied to my bed right where my pillow is. i also make sure i get out of bed at the same time every morning, staying in bed & having too much sleep is just as bad for your natural sleep clock as not enough sleep. we also have a black out blind (quite cheep from ikea) covering the window as well as curtains. its needed more in the summer but also helps in the winter cus we have an awful orange street light right outside our house.

if i am having a particually bad time with anxiety (which affcts my sleep) i start taking kalms with every meal, they contain valerian, hops & gentian. they help relax the body & promote natural sleep, they work for me but i only take them if i feel the anxiety building. i'm unsure of what a similar product would be in the US.

for me, i can't drop to sleep either...its forcing myself to wake up. say i need to be up at 6:30am (which i did when i had my job - now i get up whenever)...but now i have to get up at 6:30am again for whatever reason...
and i usually get to sleep around 2 am...

i'm still going ot be forcing myself to get up at 6:30am and i'm gonna keep myself up until i start goign to bed earlier in the night

it only takes me a day, 2 at most (that is rare though for me to go to 2 days) for me to feel i corrected my sleep schedule...its one thing i kept from school freshman year.

I sleep far better in colder temps than I do in the summer heat.

The window is open, the fan is blowing, and its 28 degrees outside.

When I crawl naked between the flannel sheets and quilts, I'll sleep like a baby.

Be regular. And sleep with a fan on. It mutes all those little night noises.

Takes about 2 weeks to reset a person's bio clock after getting out of their usual sleep habit.

Slept like a baby. Even at 24 degrees and the fan blowing on me. :)

drives me nuts when people used to wake me up for different reasons..telling me that whatever they woke me for would only take a minute. or if a roomie walked in to loud making lots of noise they would say "oh I'm sorry, I'll be quiet so u can get back to sleep"
I've known lots of people that can snore away the minute their head hits the pillow....but their "minute" disruption takes me at least an hour to get back to sleep and I'll probably spend that hour being pissed at whoever woke me up.
