You know theres many kids in my school who are Anti drugs and theres alot of arguments to go into that. The thing that gets me though is when someone says "drugs do not help artist infact it impairs them from doing there best".I mean really from the drugs of the 60s and 70s LSD,shrooms to 80s and 90s which went with no idea actually but probably harder stimulant drugs thats what Ill call them and im sure many cool bands do today as well just not as open about it the bands that give the anti drug messages are usually really bad and so controlled. Thats not the point all the famous bands used them thats not to say you cant be good without and im sure there are bands who are but so many artist were clearly effected in a good way and thats just with music.Im sure many other art forms have been to.Although even the bands not big on drugs just say hard drugs so they probably still drink and do pot cause neither of those are considered hard drugs.
i dunno, drugs affect different people in different ways. i know that when i'm stoned i'm not really in a state to properly execute whatever ideas pop into my head. and even once i sober up, i can't figure out exactly what to do with those ideas. however, i'm not entirely sure if it has anything to do with the drugs, but when i'm sober i've noticed myself intentionally thinking about things as if i were stoned. this has been helpful for me in coming up with new weird ideas with a sober mind. i have very limited experience with drugs other than weed, so this is only from my experience.
from many years' observation: working in /around music increases your chances of finding any drugs. Some ideas come under influence, but unless an individual is at the point where they need a chem to function, rarely is great work done. Psychedelics tend to break this rule, and I hypothesize that it is because the individuals can capture what they see/process on them. Some people will trip and then go on a creative binge trying to work though what they experienced. I do notice that how people receive a message can change on various drugs.
I was discussing this with a friend the other day, only we where talking specificaly about weed. We concluded that it can both help you or impair you, depending on what you're trying to do. For both of us, if we try something more technical than creative, like a portrait, a complicated musical piece, and other similar things, weed makes it harder, but if you're trying to do something more creative than technical, like an improvisation or a creative drawing, it makes it easier, like the creatiity flows better. At least that's what we both experienced, him while playing base and me while drawing and juggling.
Many of what are considered the best albums of all time (Revolver, Pet Sounds, Sgt Pepper etc.) were inspired by LSD experiences.
with the right mind, drugs such as marijuana/ hallucinogens can help create the most complex wonderful music we have ever heard. not saying it cant b down with the sober mind as well, but sometimes drugs helps gets everything flowing, its like it gets straight down to business it doesnt beat around the bush... lol
The real reason I take most drugs is to listen to music. I get high, turn on some nice chill music. I eat shrooms or acid, turn on some trippy psychedelic music. I take a roll, I blast techno. Drugs and Music just go hand in hand for me.
Hallucinogens seem to be the most helpful I think most others may fuel emotion and things but its harder to put that into something.LOL i just found bill hicks hes great.
"Go to the extreme... then retreat to a more useful position." Words to live by....from Brian Eno. Or the old saw about Henry Miller (?) and his crazy daughter and how Jung said they both were deep sea divers but Henry was able to surface with his treasures and show the world but his daughters pearls were just too big to lift. Plus, making 'good' music doesn't equal being a well balanced, healthy happy person...which, not to be selfish but is much more important in my view.
Well some of the most happy people i know do drugs infact you could say haveing the same amount of fun just is not possible sober.Moderation is all that matters in health department.Other then that i dont get your little saying there sorry.
On the performance side, I wonder how the Doors would have been if Jim Morrison never took a drug, and the same goes for a lot of bands. Who is to say it would have been better or worse. I do find it hard to believe that it may have been better in some cases, especially in Jim's case. As for the listener's end, well, that is up to the individual. Maybe music that was written by those on drugs are better to listen to and understand if you are on drugs yourself. And maybe vice-versa for the flip side of the coin. All I know is I have done drugs for most of my life, from 13- 42, just recently having given up all drugs except alcohol, and I played guitar in a band in my 20's. I wouldnt have been able to play live in front of an audience without some type of help from drugs, but then again, I might have played better when just practicing and not being in front of an audience.
It may not have helped to much on the performance side besides what you said helping perform infront of a audience. If it helped it would be on the actual song writing process the style or the mood but theres no way of saying if it turned out better or worse because of well what you said.
Hello children! Let me tell you the story of Tony. Tony was a straight A student, very handsome, very popular, with a beautiful, smart girlfriend. One day, Tony saw some rough-looking boys behind the tool shed, and there was a funny smell coming from them. He went over to them and said 'hey... what's that?'. They laughed and said 'do you want some?', he said 'sure!' and so began Tony's downward spiral into self-destruction. Suddenly, Tony didn't so well in school. He couldn't concentrate on what he was supposed to do. His parents tried to talk to him, but he just told them to FUCK OFF. His beautiful girlfriend started crying and begged him to please stop hanging out with those horrible boys, take a shower, and get your act together. He called her a NASTY COOZE and pushed her away. One day, his teacher found him on the side of the railroad tracks, muttering to himself, and he smelled like a dead groundhog. The moral of the story? DON'T SMOKE CATNIP.
It’s like Lewis Black said "The beatles were not good musicians BECAUSE they did a lot of drugs, they were good musicians who happened to do a lot of drugs" Yes maybe Lucy in the sky would not have bveen written without certain things, but bands like that still would have been good.
psychedelics (marijuana included) can easily help you help yourself [be more creative]. no doubt about that. listen to the Beatles before they got into LSD. listen to Hendrix when early 66, then compare it to after. its like he got all the genres he was playing, and combined them. listen to Coltrane before 64 when he tried LSD, and after. etc.
While I don't do heroin myself I find that my favorite drug songs are always about heroin. (Black Sabbath's "Hand of Doom", Neil Youngs "Needle and the Damage Done", Velvet Undergrounds "Heroin", etc)
Not too sure about that, you could only guess what john would tell you. They wouldnt have been half as good. Sometimes it takes lsd to really realize how good music is. Take three tabs then listen to lucy or strawberry fields. AMAZING
