I'll be moving come January 20th...one day before Obama takes the reins... I'm kind of nervous as I've never been to Colorado as an adult ....but.... I chose Denver over Portland, Seattle, Eugene, OlyWa, Takilma, Arcata etc for that very reason! To see what's out there and give it a chance before 'settling down' and developing some roots. Also, it's cheaper! So anyways lets talk Capitol Hill! There seem to be many affordable apartments. ...are there any that are smoking-in-the-open type friendly? ...and still safe to walk around at night? The Whitaker Neighborhood in Eugene was nice that way. But also expensive. I don't mind 'lively' places (...as opposed to downright dangerous.) Basically I'm looking for a quite place to do my thing ...I don't take up much space....love silence...also socially liberal people. I'm relatively 'clean cut' I guess.... I like to go to the gym, my hair is short. 6'3 185 lbs. No weird-beard or crazy facial hair sculptures. It itches...and I scare children if I don't shave every other day. Hmmm what else? I'll be on bike or foot, I'm a future college student, I don't go to the bars or clubs too much anymore, I'm a crafty, houseplantin' book readin' homebody intent on getting a degree in Biology someday and trippin out exercising and enjoying nature (but that'll have to wait until I have a degree and can afford to live in the woods I guess) etc etc etc. good credit, good rental history all that shit. Will be working pretty much whatever basic job I can to pay the bills. That's about it. Are there any independently minded sections to be aware of or streets to avoid at all costs? Are "Broadway, Downing Street, Colfax Avenue, and Sixth Avenue, " all really really busy avenues? Lots of buses going through there? Lots of crackheads? Any 'hip' houses or landlords I should check out when I get up there? Gay friendly neighborhoods or houses etc etc? Is it a pipe-dream thinking I can live *in* the city and enjoy quiet nights without paying over 650 a month rent? Feel free to PM or throw any advice as you see fit. Thanks!
Yeah, stay at least 2 blocks from Colfax. Its not sooooooo dangerous, but those crack heads and drunks fight all the time and its loud.
Yeah, like I've said before... somewhere else, I don't mind carrying a knife for protection...but having to carry it *out in the open* in the neighborhood I live in would be a little weird. I mean I've done that before (had to flash a weapon to nip a potential situation in the bud before anything really happened) ... but that was a long time ago and not where I'm wanting to be now.
I only go to Denver like once a year and don’t know down town at all but Colfax is doggie. Not like the Bronx or a bad neighborhood in Philly but not the best place to take late night walks. Really Denver is not that dangerous there is some areas where the crackheads accumulate mostly around old neighborhoods with really cheap rent and Colfax.
Alot of Denver is pretty upscale now but then you can go 2 or 3 blocks and it will be gheto but I can tell you that smoking is the lowest arrestable priority for the Denver PD now, i know of a few people who were busted and the cop just told them to take it inside and let them go.
However in Silverthorn (Did I spell that right?) if you get caught smoking there are a few cops that will bust you're ass hard as they can.
