I like my strings best a bit before they get to the rusty stage. Fresh strings just slip out of tune to much to enjoy.

i usualy break a string on my bass around every month

usualy alternating between the g and d string, but i recently broke an e string for the first time.. it was probly at least 1 or 2 years old

and as far as new VS old strings.. yeah, its personal opinion

In response to someone on an old thread i just posted saying i change my 2 main guitars strings (acoustic and electric) once every week (i would change them twice a week if i could afford it) and at the same time i completely clean and polish the guitars. I was amazed by the fact that he was advising someone to change their strings and clean the fretboard once every 3 months!!! to me that is pure madness. I mean i couldnt live with 2 week old strings let alone 3 months :(

Saying that i do play my guitar for about 7 hours a day (about 4-5 hours of that is due to the fact i'm in music college) but still 3 months of a set of strings seems a tad bit excessive to me :p

oh well, i dunno lol :p

    toodles :)

Fucking hell guys i just read the whole ''zorba the grape'' and ''orison319'' argument!!! In my opinion right, i agree that you should change your strings regularly but I don't agree with orison319's attitude its fucking ridiculous.

But waiting 2 weeks for the strings to break in, is just plain nasty you can break the strings in yourself by tuning your guitar and then physically stretching the strings a couple of times each and then retuning and repeat. it takes like 2 minutes without a tuner. I agree with what he said about you not being dedicated... to a certain extent that is true, in the sense that I'm assuming that, similarly to me orison319 takes a lot of pride in being a musician and takes amazingly good care of his instruments because they are such a major part of his life. i assume if you can change your strings every 6 months then you cant play it often enough to warrant new strings so maybe thats the reason he was calling you undedicated? but then not everyone is going to be a die-hard musician so if he meant it as an insult then he is a bit of a prick :p

What the weather is like where you are has a huge effect on how often you change strings, as well as where you play. Bars and venues are way worse on strings than just at home, and down here in the south where I am the humidity makes string changing a more often thing than dry places.

For me personally, I prefer strings that are new but have been played once or twice. I play professionally but sometimes go a few months beween changing strings when I can.

Someone told me Neil Young prefers To play with old strings... I kind of like the "off key twang" of old strings...

Right now I have really old electric guitar strings on my acoustic, honestly id like to get some new strings on there... but I make them work and tuning to 5ths sometimes it doesnt even sound like a guitar its cool

I change 'em once every few weeks as needed. With bass strings, that are expensive to replace so often, you can throw them in a pot of boiling water with some baking soda and that cleans them damn good.

i'm about to change my acoustic guitar strings. see if maybe i can do it in under 5 minutes...
